Chapter 4 - A Mother's Sacrifice

The penthouse atop the Moretti Tower was transformed into an impenetrable fortress. Armed guards stood at every elevator shaft, sniper nests covered the surrounding rooftops, and motion sensors lined every perimeter window. Yet inside the vast master bedroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly quiet.
Sophia was hooked up to a secondary life-support monitor. The temporary medication had stabilized her vital signs, but Dr. Sterling had pulled me into my private study with devastating news.
"The synthetic thallium has crossed the blood-brain barrier, Dominic," Sterling whispered, his voice heavy with defeat. "Her liver is failing. Without the synthesized counter-reagent, she has seventy-two hours before multi-organ failure shuts her heart down permanently."
"Then synthesize it!" I slammed my fist onto the mahogany desk, cracking the polished wood. "I have twenty billion dollars in offshore accounts! Buy whatever lab, whatever scientist, whatever chemical you need!"
"Money can't buy time," Sterling replied grimly. "This specific neurotoxin—Viper-9—was developed exclusively by a black-market pharmaceutical syndicate operating out of St. Petersburg. The only living man on North American soil who possesses the baseline antidote is Nikolai Petrov."
Nikolai Petrov. My sworn enemy. The ruthless head of the Russian Bratva with whom I had fought a five-year turf war over the Eastern Seaboard. A war that had cost hundreds of lives.
I rubbed my temples, the exhaustion of the past week clawing at my sanity. A soft knock broke the silence. The door creaked open, and Lily walked in, holding a small, hand-drawn picture on a piece of printer paper. She approached the desk and placed the paper in my hands.
It was a crayon drawing of three figures holding hands under an umbrella: a giant man with two guns, a woman with long hair, and a little girl with emerald eyes.
"Mommy told me a story once," Lily said softly, leaning against my knee. "She said my daddy was a king who fought dragons to keep the kingdom safe. Are you going to fight the dragon to save Mommy?"
My heart, hardened by fifteen years of murder, extortion, and underworld warfare, completely fractured inside my chest. I knelt down until I was at eye level with her, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead.
"I will tear the entire world apart before I let anything happen to your mother," I promised, my voice raspy with emotion.
Lily reached out and touched the scar across my cheek. "Don't let them hurt you, Daddy."
Hearing that word—*Daddy*—sent a shockwave of raw, unyielding power through my veins. I stood up, adjusting the cuffs of my tailored suit, and racked the slide of my firearm.
I called Marco into the study. "Assemble the elite strike team. We're heading to the Petrov syndicate's private casino in Brighton Beach tonight."
Marco frowned slightly. "Dominic, walking into Petrov's stronghold is suicide. He’ll execute you on sight."
May you like
"He can try," I said coldly. "Tell him the King of New York is coming to negotiate."
