Chapter 1 - THE SAVIOR IN THE SHADOWS

The stench of poverty and moldy plaster in Queens couldn't mask the metallic scent of fresh blood pooling on the worn linoleum. Sophia lay limp in my arms, her skin translucent and burning with fever, her chestnut hair matted against her damp forehead. Seven years of cold, suffocating fury—seven years of believing she had abandoned me for another life—evaporated the instant her fragile weight settled against my chest.
"Mommy! Please, wake up!" Lily’s voice trembled, but her small hands were already moving with chilling, mechanical efficiency. She grabbed a towel from a chair, pressing it firmly to Sophia’s mouth to stem the crimson flow, her emerald eyes blazing with an eerie focus.
"Marco!" I roared into the quiet hallway, my voice shaking the decaying foundations of the building. "Get the private surgical team on the line! Have Dr. Sterling prepare the trauma unit at the safehouse immediately! If she dies before we make Manhattan, I’ll bury everyone responsible alive!"
Marco stepped into the doorway, his silhouette blocking the dim corridor light. His hands were tucked inside his tailored overcoat, his eyes scanning the run-down apartment not with shock, but with a cold, calculating detachment that I was too frantic to question. "Boss, taking an unregistered patient into our facility risks exposing the location to the Petrov syndicate. Are you sure—"
"Do not test me, Marco," I snarled, scooping Sophia into my arms while reaching out my free hand toward Lily. "She is coming. And the girl is coming with us."
Lily didn't hesitate. She looked at me—the towering, blood-splattered mobster who held her mother—and slid her tiny, trembling palm into my grasp. "You promised you wouldn't die on Fifth Avenue," she whispered, her gaze locking onto mine with devastating intensity. "You have to make sure Mommy doesn't die either."
"I swear on my life, little one," I choked out, a strange, suffocating pressure clamping down on my chest that had nothing to do with my heart condition.
We sprinted down the narrow flights of stairs and piled into the armored Maybach idling on the curb. Outside, the New York rain began to hammer the asphalt like a hail of bullets. As the engine roared to life, Lily sat rigid beside her unconscious mother, methodically checking Sophia's pulse just like she had checked mine on the pavement three days ago.
I looked at the girl's jawline, the stubborn curve of her chin, and the striking emerald shade of her irises—identical to the reflection I saw in the mirror every morning. My mind spun into an abyss of terrifying realization. Sophia hadn't run away with a lover. She had run away carrying my child.
Suddenly, Sophia’s eyelids fluttered. Her trembling fingers reached upward, clutching my soaked lapels with surprising strength. "Dominic..." she wheezed, blood flecking her pale lips. "Don't let them... take her. He... he found us..."

Her head dropped back against the leather seat, the monitors in the medical kit flatlining into a frantic, piercing beep.
