Chapter 6 - The Lion's Den

The deafening roar of gunfire transformed the subterranean brewery into a slaughterhouse.
I moved from pillar to pillar, using every inch of the familiar terrain to my advantage. I knew the blind spots of the underground facility because I had designed them myself. Every shadow, every ventilation duct, every structural beam was a weapon in my hands.
Two of Marco's mercenaries attempted to flank me from the left catwalk stairwell. I pulled a flashbang grenade from my tactical vest, pulled the pin, and bounced it off the steel fermentation tank. A blinding flash and an ear-splitting detonation disoriented both men; before they could recover their vision, two precise rounds ended their assault.
"Don't let him bottleneck you!" Marco screamed from the upper gantry, firing his submachine gun in wild bursts. "Flank him from the loading docks! He's only one man!"
"One man who made you everything you are!" I yelled back, reloading my rifle with fluid muscle memory.
I grabbed an incendiary charge from my belt, slammed it against the main fuel line feeding the facility's backup diesel generators, and set the timer for thirty seconds.
If Marco wanted this fortress, he could have it in ashes.
I sprinted toward the secondary utility ladder leading to the catwalks. Bullets tore through my jacket, one grazing my left shoulder and leaving a searing trail of white-hot pain, but the adrenaline surging through my veins completely drowned out the agony.
I reached the top platform just as Marco was turning to reload.
I tackled him with the full weight of my body, sending both of us crashing against the metal railing. Marco’s gun clattered over the edge, plunging forty feet into the darkness below.
We traded brutal, bone-crushing blows. Marco drew a tactical combat knife, slashing across my chest, slicing through the Kevlar outer layer and drawing blood. I blocked his next thrust, grabbed his wrist, and delivered a devastating headbutt that broke his nose in an explosion of crimson.
Marco stumbled back, gasping for air, blood pouring down his mouth. "You're too late, Damian! Even if you kill me, Victor's private jet is already tracking the airfield in Gary! Your little whore and your son will never leave the tarmac alive!"
My vision went entirely red.
I grabbed Marco by the throat, driving him back against the guardrail until the metal groaned under our combined weight.
"They are not in Gary," I growled into his ear.
Marco's eyes widened in sudden realization. "The flash drive... it had false flight coordinates..."
"I knew you were listening on the comms before the breach," I whispered coldly. "I sent them north to my private dock on Lake Michigan. You sent Victor's entire army to an empty hangar in Indiana."
Down below, the incendiary charge reached zero.
A massive fireball ripped through the generator room, sending shockwaves through the catwalk. The industrial facility began to collapse in a cascade of twisted metal and flames.
"Goodbye, Marco."
With a final, merciless shove, I flipped Marco over the railing. He plummeted into the inferno below, his screams swallowed by the roar of the explosion.
I didn't look back. I sprinted toward the emergency roof ventilation chute, pulling myself up through the access ladder just as the entire subterranean safe house collapsed into a burning crater behind me.
I emerged into the cold Chicago night, drenched in rain, soot, and blood. I pulled out my secure satellite phone and dialed a single number.

"Lucas," I breathed, clutching my bleeding shoulder. "Prepare the war room. Tonight, we dismantle Victor’s syndicate down to the last brick."
