Chapter 5 - BLOOD TRUTH

The blaring sirens of the fortress security system shattered the stillness of the underground bunker. Red emergency lights bathed the concrete corridors in a bloody glow.
Norah gasped, rushing toward the bedroom where Milo was sleeping. "Damian! What is happening?!"
"Stay in the panic room!" I shouted, sprinting to the armory console mounted on the study wall. I grabbed an automatic assault rifle, checked the magazine, and strapped on a tactical vest. "We have a breach at the street level entrance."
I checked the security monitors. The closed-circuit cameras showed four black tactical vans parked over the brewery entrance. Heavy explosives had been detonated at the reinforced steel vault door. Armed mercenaries wearing night-vision gear and unmarked black uniforms were already moving through the ventilation access shafts.
And leading the first wave was Marco.
My stomach dropped into an abyss of cold fury. It hadn't been an external leak. Marco—the man I had raised from a street enforcer, the man who had stood by my right hand at every execution, the man who had brought me the forged evidence against Norah six years ago—was the mole.
"Marco," I muttered under my breath, my jaw clenching until my teeth nearly cracked. "It was you all along."
He had engineered the entire conspiracy. He had framed Norah six years ago to eliminate the only person who had any softening influence over me, keeping me ruthlessly focused on expanding the empire that Marco secretly plotted to usurp alongside Victor. And today, when he saw Milo, he knew his six-year-old lie was unravelling.
"Norah!" I ran into the bedroom.
Milo was awake, crying and clinging to Norah’s waist as the sirens wailed. Norah held him fiercely, looking at me with wide, terrified eyes.
"There's an emergency escape tunnel behind the wine cellar," I said rapidly, kneeling before them. I reached into my pocket, pulled out an encrypted flash drive and a keycard, and pressed them into Norah’s hand. "This tunnel leads to an underground storm drain three blocks south. There’s a nondescript sedan parked at the exit. Take Milo and drive directly to the airfield in Gary, Indiana. My private pilot has orders to fly you to Switzerland the moment you scan this card."
"Damian, no!" Norah grabbed my lapels, her voice shaking. "Come with us! There are too many of them!"
"They came for me," I said, looking down at Milo.
I reached out, gently cupping the boy's cheek. Milo stopped crying, his storm-gray eyes staring into mine with remarkable calm amidst the chaos.
"Listen to me, buddy," I whispered to him, my voice thick with emotion. "You take care of your mom, okay? You're a Moretti. You are stronger than anything in this world."
Milo nodded slowly, reaching into his pocket and handing me his small red plastic car. "Keep it safe for me, mister."
A small, genuine smile touched my lips for the first time in a decade. "I'll guard it with my life."
I pushed Norah toward the hidden door behind the bookshelf. "Go! Now! I will buy you time!"
"Damian... please survive," Norah whispered, tears streaming down her face, before disappearing into the dark tunnel with Milo.
The heavy steel reinforced door sealed shut behind them.
The second the lock engaged, the heavy blast doors of the main corridor exploded outward in a cloud of smoke, shrapnel, and concrete dust.
Through the haze, three mercenaries stepped forward, their assault rifles raised. I didn't hesitate. I opened fire, cutting the first two down before they could clear the doorway. The third dove for cover, but I advanced with relentless fury, firing controlled bursts until the corridor was slick with blood.
I stepped through the smoke into the vast brewery basement, where a dozen more armed men were fanning out.
And standing on the upper metal catwalk, holding a smoking detonator, was Marco.
"You should have let me shoot her in the café, Damian!" Marco yelled down, his voice echoing off the iron fermentation tanks. "You were the greatest Don this city ever had! But the moment you saw that woman and that bastard child, you became weak! Chicago needs a king with ice in his veins, not a sentimental fool!"
"You betrayed your oath, Marco!" I shouted back, stepping behind a heavy iron pillar as a hail of bullets chipped the concrete around me. "You fabricated the evidence against Norah! You sold out my brother to Victor!"
"Your brother was an idiot, and Norah was a distraction!" Marco sneered, motioning his men to flank my position. "I built this syndicate just as much as you did! Victor offered me fifty percent of the entire Midwest corridor. All I have to do is bring him your head!"

"Come and take it," I roared, stepping out from behind the pillar and opening fire.
