Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

Three days later, the rain had completely stopped. A crisp, golden autumn morning bathed the city of Chicago in brilliant sunlight.
The front pages of every major newspaper in the country carried the story: CHICAGO MOB TYCOON VICTOR FALCONE FOUND DEAD IN HIGH-RISE FALL... SYNDICATE CRUMBLES UNDER MASSIVE FEDERAL PROBE.
In a private conference room on the top floor of the Moretti Tower, I stood before the remaining leaders of the Chicago underworld.
The room was dead silent. Every Don, capo, and lieutenant sat with their hands flat on the table, their heads bowed in total submission. They had witnessed the absolute, ruthless annihilation of Victor's empire and Marco’s faction in less than seventy-two hours.
"Let this be understood by every man in this room," I announced, my voice carrying absolute authority. "The Moretti syndicate is withdrawing entirely from illegal arms trafficking, extortion, and violence. All operations are being transitioned into legitimate corporate holdings, shipping logistics, and philanthropic trusts."
A murmur of shock rippled through the table, but no one dared to raise an objection.
"If any man among you wishes to continue the old ways, you may take your crew and leave this city peacefully," I continued, leaning forward. "But if a single drop of innocent blood is spilled in this territory again, I will personally hunt you down. Is that clear?"
"Understood, Don Moretti," they chorused in unison, rising to their feet and bowing their heads.
I turned my back on the council table and walked out of the boardroom for the last time.
Lucas met me in the hallway, holding a leather briefcase containing the final transfer documents.
"Everything is signed, Damian," Lucas said, smiling faintly. "The legal trusts have been established for the boy. The charges against Norah have been officially purged from federal databases through our legal counsel. You are a free man."
"Thank you, Lucas," I said, shaking his hand firmly. "The empire is yours to manage legally now. Keep it clean."
"Where are you going, Boss?" Lucas asked.
I pulled Milo’s small red plastic car out of my suit pocket, looking down at it with a warm smile.
May you like
"Home."
