Chapter 8 - THE STOLEN TRUTH

The penthouse terrace overlooked the shimmering Manhattan skyline. The midnight breeze carried the gentle scent of spring flowers, but inside the master nursery, peace reigned supreme.
Three white cribs stood side-by-side. Leo slept with his tiny fists balled against his cheeks; Maya had a small pink blanket clutched in her fingers, while Lucas softly snored with his face turned toward his brother.
I stood by the doorway, watching them breathe, my heart aching with an overwhelming mixture of gratitude and sorrow.
A warm cashmere throw was gently draped over my shoulders. Nicholas stood behind me, his hands resting lightly on the fabric.
"They're getting stronger every day," Nicholas whispered.
"Because of you," I replied, turning to look into his intense gray eyes. "Nicholas... at the gala, you said you bought Ethan's debt three months ago. You’ve planned this down to the very second. Why did you really help me that night on the bus? You could have sent an ambulance and walked away."
Nicholas sighed, a rare vulnerability softening the harsh lines of his handsome face. He walked over to the terrace glass, staring out at the city lights.
"Ten years ago, before I built Sterling Enterprises," Nicholas began slowly, "I was a bankrupt young engineer with a dream. Your father, Thomas Hayes, was the only investor who believed in me. He wrote me a check for fifty thousand dollars and told me: 'When you make it, Nicholas, make sure you protect those who cannot protect themselves.'"
My eyes widened. "My father..."
"When Thomas passed away, I was in Europe closing a major acquisition," Nicholas continued, his voice tight. "By the time I returned, Ethan had already manipulated you into marriage and buried your father’s legacy. I swore I would find a way to honor Thomas's memory. When my security team flagged that Ethan had abandoned you in that storm... I swore I would give my life before I let his daughter break."
Tears welled in my eyes. I walked over to him, reaching out to touch his rugged jaw. "You didn't just honor his memory, Nicholas. You gave my children their lives back."
Nicholas looked down at me, his gaze blazing with a fierce, untamed emotion that took my breath away. He caught my hand, pressing his lips against the inside of my wrist.
"I didn't plan for one thing, Claire," he murmured, his voice husky.
"What?"
"I didn't plan on falling in love with you."

My heart hammered against my ribs as his hand slid to the nape of my neck, pulling me gently toward him. His lips brushed against mine in a kiss that was tender, desperate, and filled with a raw devotion that erased every scar Ethan had ever left on my soul.
