Chapter 2 - THE BLACK MAYBACH IN THE STORM

The flashing yellow hazard lights of the city bus cut through the downpour, reflecting off the rising tide of rainwater pooling along the curb of lower Manhattan. Inside, the world had shrunk to agonizing white noise and the violent contractions gripping my abdomen. Every muscle in my body seized as I bent double over the faux-leather seat, my fingernails digging deep into the cracked vinyl.
"Breathe, miss, just breathe! An ambulance is on the way!" the bus driver yelled over his shoulder, slamming the vehicle into park near the exit ramp. "Dispatch says traffic on the FDR is at a dead standstill! It might be fifteen minutes!"
"I don't have fifteen minutes," I choked out, tears scalding my cold cheeks. "They’re coming... God, please, it's only twenty-eight weeks..."
Three lives. Three fragile heartbeats fluttered erratically beneath my stretched skin. Ethan had signed the eviction papers and boarded a private jet to Los Angeles with Sabrina, leaving me without a single dollar in my frozen account, without a roof over my head, and now, my babies were fighting to enter a world that had offered their mother nothing but cruelty.
Another spasm tore through my spine, ripping a raw scream from my throat. Several passengers backed away in panic, while an elderly woman held my hand tightly, repeating prayers under her breath.
Suddenly, the blinding glare of high-beam headlights illuminated the interior of the bus. A sleek, midnight-black Maybach flanked by two armored SUVs sliced through the gridlock, ignoring the traffic flow and braking sharply right against the bus doors.
The bus doors hissed open. The chilly midnight wind rushed in, accompanied by the authoritative click of bespoke leather oxfords against wet asphalt.
A tall figure stepped onto the bus.
He moved with an aura of absolute dominance that instantly silenced the murmurs of the crowded bus. He wore an immaculate, bespoke charcoal overcoat over a tailored Italian suit. Silver cufflinks glinted beneath the harsh interior lights. His jawline was sharp as carved granite, his dark hair dampened slightly by the rain, and his piercing steel-gray eyes scanned the chaotic bus before locking directly onto me.
It was Nicholas Sterling.
The undisputed titan of Wall Street. A man whose name alone made Fortune 500 CEOs tremble and hedge fund managers liquidate portfolios in terror. Ethan had spent five years desperately trying to get a thirty-second meeting with him, only to be dismissed like dust.
"Clear the aisle," Nicholas commanded in a voice low, resonant, and completely devoid of doubt.
No one dared to argue. The passengers parted instantly.
Nicholas knelt before my trembling form without hesitating, not caring that the muddy rainwater from the floor soaked into his tailored trousers. His large, warm hand cupped my freezing face, his steel gaze cutting straight through my terror.
"Claire," he said softly, yet with a power that grounded my spiraling consciousness. "Look at me."
"I... I can't," I sobbed, clutching my stomach as another wave of agony hit. "My babies... Ethan took everything... they're too early..."
"You are not alone anymore," Nicholas stated, his voice an unshakable vow. "And no one under my watch dies tonight."
Before I could process his words, he slipped his strong arms beneath my shoulders and knees, lifting me effortlessly against his broad chest. The scent of cedarwood, rain, and expensive tobacco enveloped me. He carried me down the steps of the bus into the storm, shielding my shivering body with his own overcoat as his security detail forced open the path.
"Mr. Sterling, Presbyterian Memorial has cleared Trauma Bay 1," his head of security announced, holding the Maybach's rear door open.
Nicholas placed me gently onto the heated leather seat, climbing in immediately beside me and pulling my head against his shoulder. "Floor it. If anything happens to her or those children, I will buy that hospital and tear it down brick by brick."

The car surged forward into the dark, sirens blazing, while another vicious contraction dragged me into darkness.
