Chapter 5 - THE EMPIRE’S SHIELD

Two weeks passed like a surreal dream.
Every single day, Nicholas Sterling arrived at the NICU at precisely six o'clock in the evening. The man who made global markets fluctuate with a single tweet would sit quietly on a sterile plastic stool, rolling up the sleeves of his five-thousand-dollar shirts, and hold tiny Leo and Lucas against his bare chest for skin-to-skin contact, while I cradled little Maya.
Watching this ruthless billionaire gently cradle a two-pound infant with infinite tenderness stirred something dangerous inside my battered heart.
"You're good with them," I whispered one evening, watching him adjust the tiny knitted cap over Lucas’s head.
"Children deserve safety, Claire," Nicholas replied quietly, his eyes darkening with an old, buried pain. "I grew up in an environment where weakness was punished. Nobody protected me. I will not stand by and let innocent blood pay for a coward's ego."
"Why Ethan?" I asked, gathering the courage I had lacked for days. "This isn't just about helping me. Why do you hate him?"
Nicholas looked up, his gaze locking with mine. "Ethan’s father built their family business on stolen patents—patents created by your late father, Thomas Hayes. Ethan knew it. He married you to keep those proprietary rights buried under marital property clauses. The moment he thought he had successfully transferred the tech offshore, he discarded you."
The room spun. My breath caught in my throat. "Ethan... used me to steal my father's legacy?"
"Yes," Nicholas said, his jaw tightening. "And five days ago, I bought back every single one of those patents. They are now legally registered under a trust fund in your name and your children’s names. You are no longer broke, Claire. You are the majority shareholder of the tech empire Ethan tried to build."
Before I could speak, the hospital room door was pushed open.
My heart seized as Ethan Mercer strode into the private hallway, flanked by two frantic-looking lawyers. He looked disheveled, the designer suit wrinkled, dark circles ringing his eyes.
"Claire!" Ethan barked, not noticing Nicholas sitting in the dim corner of the nursery room. "What kind of cheap game are you playing? Who authorized these injunctions against my firm? You need to sign a retraction immediately, or I swear to God I'll make sure you never see a dime in child support!"
I stood up, holding Maya protectively against my chest. For five years, Ethan’s voice had made me cower in self-doubt. But now, looking at the man who had abandoned his unborn triplets in a thunderstorm, I felt nothing but icy disgust.
"Get out, Ethan," I said steadily. "You have no rights here."
"I am your husband!" Ethan snarled, taking an aggressive step toward me. "You belong to—"
A hand made of iron clamped down on Ethan’s shoulder.
Nicholas Sterling stepped out from the shadows. With a flick of his wrist, he spun Ethan around and shoved him backward against the opposite wall.
Ethan gasped for air, his eyes widening in pure terror as he recognized the man standing over him. "S-Sterling?! What... what are you doing here?"

Nicholas loomed over Ethan like an apex predator, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. "If you step within a hundred yards of Claire or these children ever again, Ethan, I won't just ruin your company. I will erase your name from this city."
