Chapter 6 - CRUMBLING EMPIRES

The roar of heavy V8 engines shattered the silence of the country evening. Four armored Chevrolet Suburbans with tinted windows ground to a halt directly outside the main gates of Thorne Manor.
Sarah and Richard were still huddled beside their discarded luggage on the grassy shoulder of the road, weeping and shivering in the dropping temperature. When the SUV doors swung open, six heavily built men in dark overcoats stepped out, led by Dominic Moretti—a notorious enforcer whose brutal reputation stretched across the entire Midwest.
"Well, well," Moretti said, his gravelly voice cutting through the cold air as he looked down at Richard. "Look at the high-rolling developer. Sleeping on the curb like a stray dog. Where's my twelve million, Montgomery?"
"Dominic... please!" Richard stammered, crawling backward in the dirt. "The money is inside! My brother-in-law, Elias... he just took over the estate! He's the owner of Vanguard Apex! He has hundreds of millions! He’s in the house right now!"
Sarah jumped to her feet, pointing frantically at the mansion. "Yes! He threw us out! He stole all our assets! If you go in there and take him hostage, he will give you whatever you want! Take him, not us!"
Moretti looked at Sarah with a look of pure contempt. "You’d sell out your own blood in two seconds flat, wouldn't you, lady? Lucky for you, I don't give a damn whose money it is, as long as it clears."
Moretti turned toward the massive wrought-iron gates and waved his hand. Two of his men pulled out hydraulic bolt cutters and prepared to breach the perimeter.
Before the steel jaws could touch the gate, blinding floodlights mounted on the estate's watchtowers ignited with the brilliance of a thousand suns, illuminating the entire roadway in stark daylight.
From the tree line surrounding the road, twelve elite operators from Vanguard Apex's private tactical division materialized from the shadows, dressed in full black tactical gear, laser sights painting crimson dots across the chests of Moretti’s men.
The heavy steel gates parted smoothly without a sound.
I walked out through the gates alone, wearing a black trench coat over my tactical sidearm, hands resting casually in my pockets. Behind me, the towering facade of Thorne Manor stood like an impenetrable fortress.
"You must be Dominic Moretti," I said, my voice echoing clearly over the idling engines.
Moretti froze, his hand hovering near the lapel of his jacket. He was a seasoned gangster who had fought in gang wars for twenty years, but he wasn't stupid. He recognized the disciplined posture, the overlapping fields of fire, and the military precision of the men surrounding him.
"You're the soldier," Moretti said carefully, keeping his hands in plain view. "Elias Vance."
"Major Vance," I corrected him. "And you are trespassing on private property under federal surveillance."
"Your brother-in-law owes my organization twelve million dollars," Moretti said, trying to maintain his ground. "He put up the deed to this land as a guarantee."
"He put up a forged deed that had zero legal value," I said, stepping closer until I was three feet from Moretti. "Richard Montgomery has no assets, no credit, and no ownership of this soil. If you want his money, you can take his watch, his shoes, and whatever loose change is in his pockets. But if one of your men raises a weapon on this road, none of you will leave this valley alive."
Moretti’s men exchanged nervous glances, feeling the red laser dots dancing across their foreheads.
"You think your trust fund scares the Chicago family, Major?" Moretti sneered, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple.
"I don't rely on trust funds, Dominic," I said softly. "I retired from the Joint Special Operations Command. Three of the current federal prosecutors in the Northern District of Illinois were my intelligence liaisons. At eight o'clock tomorrow morning, Vanguard Apex is finalizing the acquisition of the First Horizon Bank of Chicago—the bank where your syndicate launders ninety percent of its bookmaking proceeds. If you turn your cars around and leave this county right now, I will allow your accounts to remain open until Friday. If you stay, I will freeze every dollar your boss owns before midnight."
Moretti stared at me in stunned silence. He realized within five seconds that he wasn't dealing with a wealthy civilian or a crooked politician. He was dealing with an apex predator who operated at a level far above street warfare.
Moretti slowly stepped back toward his vehicle. "We're leaving."
"Dominic! No!" Sarah shrieked in horror. "You can't leave us here! Take us with you! Elias will let us die!"
Moretti didn't even look back. "Shut up, you pathetic vulture. You're lucky he didn't put you in the ground himself."
The four Suburbans executed a swift U-turn and sped away into the night, their taillights disappearing over the crest of the hill.
Sarah and Richard were left sitting alone in the cold gravel, completely stripped of their wealth, their allies, their pride, and their protection.
I looked at them one last time.
"The police transport will be here in ten minutes to book you for child endangerment and fraud," I said. "Enjoy your night in county lockup."
May you like
I turned around and walked back through the gates, the iron bars closing shut forever between my family and the monsters who had tried to destroy it.
