Chapter 10 - THE LAST AUCTION

Six months later, the golden days of early summer painted Thorne Valley in vibrant shades of emerald and sapphire.

The old municipal fairgrounds, which had once been neglected and overgrown during Sarah’s reign of greed, were alive with the sound of laughter, music, and festive chatter. Over a thousand townspeople, local farmers, schoolteachers, and business owners had gathered for the Annual Thorne Valley Charity Gala—an event now entirely funded by the Vanguard Apex Foundation.

In the center of the pavilion, a large bronze plaque was unveiled by the town mayor. It read:

THE CLARA VANCE MEMORIAL CHILDREN'S CENTER & COMMUNITY PARK

Dedicated to the resilience of our children and the enduring power of family.

Applause erupted across the crowd as Lily, standing beside me on the stage, pulled the ceremonial ribbon. She wore a bright yellow sundress, her hair flowing freely in the warm breeze, her cheeks full of health and joy.

Arthur Sterling stepped up to the microphone, holding a set of ceremonial documents.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur announced, his voice carrying across the pavilion. "As part of today’s celebration, Vanguard Apex is fulfilling Major Elias Vance’s core directive. The eight hundred acres of ancestral farmland that were previously encumbered by historical debt are hereby transferred directly into a perpetual community land trust. Every local family tenant now owns the permanent deed to their homes and fields, free of all mortgages!"

The crowd gasped in disbelief, followed by a roar of cheering, tears of joy, and thunderous applause. Farmers who had worked the land for decades with the fear of eviction hanging over their heads hugged their wives and children, raising their hats in gratitude toward the stage.

After the ceremony, Lily and I walked through the vibrant community gardens toward the newly opened stables. Where the foul swine pens had once stood behind Thorne Manor, a state-of-the-art equestrian therapy center had been built. Two gentle white ponies, a gift for Lily’s ninth birthday, grazed peacefully in the lush clover fields.

"Daddy, look!" Lily laughed, feeding a fresh carrot to the smaller pony named Starlight. "She likes me! She's not scared at all!"

"Of course she likes you, sweetheart," I said, leaning against the polished wooden fence with a contented smile. "Animals know when someone has a good, kind heart."

Dr. Althaus and Arthur walked down the stone path, holding a portfolio of architectural plans.

"The final phase of the regional pediatric hospital is approved, Elias," Dr. Althaus said with deep satisfaction. "We’ll have the best trauma specialists and child psychologists in the country stationed right here in Thorne County."

"Thank you, Doctor. Make sure every service is completely free of charge for any family in need," I replied.

Arthur looked at the sprawling valley below us—the sparkling river, the flourishing orchards, the clean streets of a town reborn from the ashes of corruption.

"You did it, Elias," Arthur said softly. "You won the war overseas, and you won the war at home. Your father and Clara would be immensely proud."

I looked down at Lily, who was laughing as the pony gently nuzzled her shoulder. The nightmare of the past was gone, replaced by a reality filled with boundless hope, security, and love.

"We won it together, Arthur," I said quietly.
