Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Ruins

The smell of ozone, iron, and burnt velvet choked my throat as the world dimmed into static. The ballroom of Blackthorne House had transformed into a war zone, but all I could hear beneath the deafening ringing in my ears was Dominic Mercer’s ragged breathing.

"Keep pressure on the left anterior chest! Get the medical transport inside now!" Dominic’s voice wasn't just commanding; it cracked with an uncharacteristic, raw terror that sent shockwaves through his armed security team. The most ruthless kingpin in Manhattan was pressing his bare hands into my shredded chiffon dress, warm blood welling between his calloused fingers. "Look at me, Mara. Look into my eyes. Stay with me!"

I tried to focus on his fierce amber gaze, but my eyes kept drifting past his broad shoulder. Across the shattered parquet floor, amidst the screaming socialites and running bodyguards, stood the specter of my nightmares.

Julian Kane.

He hadn't aged a single day. The same cruel half-smirk, the same tailored charcoal suit, the same chilling slate-gray eyes. Eight years ago, I had detonated three thousand pounds of military-grade C4 under the syndicate’s offshore compound in Gibraltar, watching through a thermal scope as the concrete fortress collapsed into the sea. I had watched his heartbeat flatline on the encrypted network monitor.

Yet there he stood, raising two fingers in a mocking salute before vanishing into the billowing smoke of the kitchen corridor.

Evelyn.

The name echoed in my skull like a funeral toll. He knew. He had always known. The shooter wasn’t a hired hitman sent by a rival mob to take Dominic’s six-year-old heir. The shooter was a hound, unleashed to flush me out into the open.

"Dominic..." I gasped, coughing up a spatter of red.

"Shh. Don't speak. You're going to live. I will tear this city apart to find who did this to you," Dominic vowed, his jaw clenched so hard the tendons in his neck strained against his collar.

Caleb’s terrified sobs cut through the haze. "Daddy! Is Mara going to die? Don't let her go to sleep!"

"She isn't dying, son. I promise you," Dominic whispered, his hand trembling as he brushed a strand of hair from my sweat-drenched forehead.

Paramedics crashed through the French doors with a trauma gurney. Hands seized my shoulders and hips, lifting me from the puddle of my own blood. As the fentanyl slammed into my IV line and the black tide rushed in, I realized the terrifying truth: if Dominic Mercer dug into who shot me, he wouldn’t find a routine mob feud. He would uncover Evelyn Cross—the deadliest operative the Iron Syndicate had ever trained, and the ghost who had stolen fifty million dollars before vanishing into the shadows.
