Chapter 11 - THE PROMISE OF DAWN

Three months later.

The Mediterranean sun painted the cliffs of Positano in brilliant shades of terracotta, gold, and azure. A gentle ocean breeze carried the sweet fragrance of lemon groves and blooming bougainvillea across the terrace of our private villa overlooking the Amalfi coast.

Down on the private white-sand beach below, Caleb was laughing hysterically, building a massive sandcastle fortress with Marcus and a team of relaxed security detail who had swapped their tactical vests for linen shirts and sunglasses.

I stood by the marble balustrade, wearing a flowing white sundress. The bullet wounds on my ribs and shoulder had faded into faint silver lines—reminders of a past that no longer had the power to haunt me.

Strong, familiar arms slipped around my waist from behind. Dominic pulled me back against his warm chest, kissing the curve of my neck where the pulse beat steady and calm.

"You're thinking too loud," Dominic murmured, resting his chin on my shoulder as we watched our son play in the surf.

"I was just thinking that for eight years, I didn't know what it felt like to wake up without looking for the nearest exit," I smiled, turning in his embrace and wrapping my arms around his neck.

"And now?" Dominic asked, his amber eyes filled with a devotion that took my breath away every single day.

"Now, I'm home."

Dominic reached into the pocket of his tailored trousers and pulled out a small black velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee like a conventional man; instead, he held my gaze with all the fierce, unwavering passion of a man who had conquered death to claim my heart.

He opened the box, revealing a flawless emerald cut diamond ring, glowing brilliantly in the Italian sunlight.

"Mara Ellis died at Blackthorne House," Dominic said softly, his deep voice trembling with emotion. "Evelyn Cross buried her ghosts at the harbor. I want the woman standing in front of me. The woman who saved my son, who stole my soul, and who taught me how to live again."

He slipped the ring onto my left finger, fitting perfectly over the scars of my past.

"Marry me, Evelyn. Build an empire with me. Be Caleb's mother, and be my wife."

Tears of pure joy blurred my vision as I buried my hands in his dark hair, pulling his lips down to mine in a kiss that promised a lifetime of safety, passion, and unyielding love.

"Yes," I breathed against his lips. "A thousand times, yes."

A cheer erupted from the beach below. We looked down to see Caleb jumping up and down in the sand, waving his little arms in wild celebration.

"She said yes! Daddy, she said yes!" Caleb shouted at the top of his lungs.

Dominic laughed—a rich, booming sound full of life—and lifted me into his arms, spinning me around on the sunlit terrace. The shadows were gone. The bullets were forgotten. And beneath the endless blue sky of a brand new dawn, our family was finally whole.
