Chapter 9 - THE BOARDROOM COLLAPSE

The boardroom on the twenty-fourth floor of the Columbus Athletic Club was lined with polished mahogany and filled with the thick scent of expensive cigars and nervous sweat.

Seated around the massive oval table were six wealthy land developers and corporate attorneys, led by Carter Sterling—a notorious predatory real estate baron who specialized in buying distressed agricultural land from vulnerable heirs.

"Gentlemen," Sterling announced, tapping his platinum pen against the table. "Richard Davis gave us his irrevocable proxy before he departed for Mexico. With his sixty percent voting block, we are executing the purchase agreement for the Vance Timber Reserve at the agreed valuation of eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars."

"That property is appraised at three point eight million," one of the junior minority shareholders protested nervously. "If the family challenges this in probate—"

"The old woman is locked away in a custodial ward and doesn't even know what day it is," Sterling sneered with a cold, dismissive laugh. "And Richard is eager for the cash. The deal closes today."

BANG.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with concussive force.

I walked into the room, flanked by Uncle Harold in his formal judicial robes and Detective Miller in full uniform. Behind us stood two state bailiffs carrying boxes filled with certified court orders.

The entire boardroom fell dead silent. Sterling froze, his pen hovering an inch above the signature line.

"Who authorized this interruption?" Sterling demanded, trying to maintain his bluster. "This is a private corporate meeting!"

"This is an ongoing criminal conspiracy to commit grand theft and corporate fraud," I said, walking straight to the head of the table and slamming Arthur’s original 1968 Corporate Charter directly in front of Sterling. "And this meeting is officially adjourned."

Sterling sneered, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple. "Little girl, I don't know who you are, but Richard Davis owns the controlling voting proxy of this corporation."

"Richard Davis owns zero shares," Uncle Harold’s deep, commanding voice boomed across the chamber. "Under Section 14 of the Vance Family Trust, any beneficiary who executes an unapproved encumbrance against the core assets is immediately stripped of all voting rights and equity titles. That clause was written by Arthur Vance and registered by my own hand fifty years ago."

I pulled out my laptop, connecting it instantly to the boardroom’s massive overhead presentation screen.

"Furthermore," I continued as the projector illuminated the room, "here is the complete forensic breakdown of the seventy-five thousand dollar illicit kickback Carter Sterling wired to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under Richard Davis’s alias two weeks ago to grease this fraudulent sale."

Sterling’s face turned an ashen shade of chalk. He slowly pushed his chair back, looking wildly around the room for support, but every single board member was already recoiling from him, hands raised in frantic surrender.

"You're done, Mr. Sterling," Detective Miller said, stepping forward with a warrant. "You have the right to remain silent."

As the officers handcuffed Sterling and led him out of the boardroom in front of his stunned colleagues, the remaining board members stood up unanimously, bowing their heads in deep embarrassment and respect.

"Miss Davis," the senior board member stammered, extending a trembling hand. "What... what are your orders regarding the Vance Timber Reserve?"

I looked around the room, feeling the full weight of Grandpa Arthur’s legacy resting securely on my shoulders.

May you like

"The reserve will be placed into a perpetual conservation trust in honor of Arthur and Evelyn Vance," I stated clearly. "Not a single tree will be cut, and not a single square foot will ever be sold."
