Chapter 6 - THE CABO CONFRONTATION

The front door flew open before I even reached the lock. Richard burst into the foyer, his face sunburned, bloated, and contorted with violent rage. Eleanor followed close behind, shivering in a ruined designer silk dress, her mascara smeared down her cheeks from hours of panicked crying on a red-eye flight.

"You arrogant little parasite!" Richard roared, marching toward the kitchen table where Arthur’s open lockbox lay under the overhead light. "Do you have any idea what you did to us? We were humiliated in front of the entire resort staff! The local police had to escort us off the property because none of our cards worked!"

"You're lucky it was just the local police and not the Mexican Federales," I said calmly, leaning against the counter with my arms crossed. "Because wire fraud across international borders carries an automatic red notice if the requisitioning bank files a formal suspicious activity report. Which, by the way, I submitted at 1:15 AM."

Eleanor lunged forward, trying to snatch the ledgers from the table. "Those are our private family documents! You have no right to be in this house! This house is Richard’s inheritance!"

I stepped smoothly in front of her, placing one firm hand on the blue deed folder. "This house is an unencumbered asset of the Evelyn Vance Revocable Living Trust. And as of midnight, your power of attorney has been legally revoked by the State Probate Court for gross fiduciary negligence and elder abuse."

"Abuse?!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing through the hollow, empty hallways. "We found her a safe place! We couldn't afford twelve thousand dollars a month at that luxury resort while maintaining our lifestyle! She’s ninety-one years old, Claire! She doesn't know where she is half the time! What difference does a window or a garden make to an old woman who can barely remember her own name?!"

"She remembered the four words of the song she sang to me during thunderstorms," I said, my voice dropping so low and sharp that Eleanor physically recoiled. "She remembered that you squeezed her wrist until it bruised to force her to sign blank transfer deeds. And she remembered that you sold Arthur's Silver Star for cash."

Richard’s eyes widened slightly, a flicker of genuine terror finally cracking through his bluster. "I... I didn't sell it. I put it in secure consignment to pay for her long-term medications."

"I have the pawn receipt from the Columbus Exchange, Richard," I said, pulling a laminated printout from my folder. "You sold it for four thousand eight hundred dollars. And thirty minutes later, that exact amount was credited to Vanessa’s personal account for a VIP cabana bottle service package in Cabo."

"Vanessa is an influencer!" Eleanor screamed defensively, tears spilling over her cheeks. "She has a brand to maintain! She was going to pay it back once the timber land sale closed!"

"The timber land sale isn't closing," I said. "Because the title company just received the true deed from this box. Your fraudulent deed with Grandma’s forged signature has been flagged as a fraudulent instrument."

Richard took two heavy steps toward me, his fists clenching at his sides. "You think you're so smart with your corporate badges and your banking rules. You give me those ledgers, Claire. Right now. Or I swear to God, you won't walk out of this house."

I didn't step back. Instead, I tapped the screen of my smart watch.

"You might want to look out the front window, Dad."

Flashing blue and red strobe lights illuminated the rain outside. Two Columbus Police cruisers and an unmarked black sedan from the State Attorney General’s Elder Protection Taskforce pulled into the driveway, blocking the rental SUV entirely.
