Chapter 5 - THE FACE OF A STRANGER

Solomon placed the flowers into a glass vase by the sink, completely oblivious to the venom dripping beneath my words. He turned around, leaning casually against the granite island, crossing his ankles.
"Where's the little guy?" he asked, looking around the quiet kitchen. "Usually Theo’s tackling me by the knees the second I walk through the door."
"Theo is with my father," I replied smoothly, continuing to dice the carrots with rhythmic, surgical precision. Thump. Thump. Thump. "Dad called earlier. He bought tickets to that private dinosaur exhibit at the natural history museum for tomorrow morning. He insisted on taking Theo out to the country estate for a sleepover so they could get an early start."
Solomon’s eyes flickered. For a microsecond, a flash of pure, unadulterated triumph washed over his features before he quickly masked it with a display of paternal consideration.
"Oh! Well... that’s wonderful," Solomon said, taking a sip of the wine I had poured. "Your dad doesn't spend enough time with Theo anyway. It’ll be great for them to bond."
Great for you, I thought, watching his throat bob as he drank. Great because now you don't even have to send your mother to babysit while you bring your whore into my home.
"Are you still working late tonight?" I asked casually, keeping my eyes fixed on the cutting board.
"Actually, no!" He smiled broadly, walking over and wrapping his arms around my waist from behind. The physical contact made every nerve in my skin scream in revolt, but I forced my muscles to remain completely relaxed. "Jennifer and I pushed through the entire presentation deck by three this afternoon. Raymond Cross personally reviewed it and told the agency it was the most brilliant market-entry strategy he’d ever seen."
"Did he?"
"Yeah. The agency board is meeting next Tuesday. Elena... they're talking about naming me Senior Vice President. It comes with equity, babe. Real equity. We’re talking seven figures in stock options within two years." He rested his chin on my shoulder, his voice dropping to a low, affectionate purr. "We can finally sell this place. Buy that oceanfront compound in Maine you’ve always wanted. Put Theo in private school. You could even quit the law firm. You wouldn't have to work eighty-hour weeks anymore."
The audacity was breathtaking. He was actively planning to launder his stolen corporate wealth through our joint assets, hoping to push me out of my legal career entirely so that I would be financially dependent, blind, and powerless when the hammer fell.
"That sounds like quite a dream, Solomon," I whispered.
"It’s not a dream, El. It’s happening. Everything we worked for." He kissed the side of my neck, then pulled back, checking his watch. "Listen, I have an early breakfast meeting with the creative directors tomorrow at eight. I might not see you before you leave for your office."
"That's fine," I said, wiping the blade of the knife with a cloth. "I have a very long day ahead of me tomorrow. A lot of... unresolved matters need to be closed."
"That’s my girl. Relentless." He chuckled, patted my hip, and walked toward the stairs. "I’m going to jump in the shower. Don't stay up too late working, okay? You look exhausted."
I stood in the kitchen until I heard the shower running on the second floor. Then, I walked into the dark living room, sat on the sofa, and pulled out my tablet.
A notification was waiting from Marcus Vance.
File decryption successful. The data packages transferred from Solomon's laptop contain non-public merger blueprints between OmniTech Logistics and Cross Capital. Value of insider arbitrage: approximately $14.2 million. Federal jurisdiction established. The US Attorney’s office has issued sealed warrants for electronic wiretaps and physical entry. We have them, Elena.
I stared at the glowing text. Fourteen million dollars. Solomon had sold his soul, his marriage, and his child’s innocence for a share of fourteen million dollars.
At 10:00 P.M., Solomon came to bed, smelling of soap and mint. He fell asleep within minutes, his breathing steady, rhythmic, the sleep of a man who believed he was utterly invincible. I lay beside him in the darkness, staring at the ceiling, right at the tiny, imperceptible lens hidden inside the fire sprinkler above our heads.
I didn't sleep a single second.
At 6:30 A.M., Solomon rose, dressed in his finest navy Italian suit, splashed on his cologne, and kissed my forehead while I feigned light sleep.
"See you tonight, honey," he murmured softly.
"See you tonight," I replied into the pillow.
The front door clicked shut at 7:15 A.M. His SUV rumbled down the driveway and faded into the morning traffic.
I sat up immediately. I took a hot shower, dressed in dark denim, flat leather boots, and a sharp black trench coat. I went downstairs, made a cup of black coffee, and waited.
At 10:45 A.M., I received a text from Marcus:
“Solomon’s vehicle just exited the corporate parking garage downtown. Jennifer Cross is in the passenger seat. They are heading toward your neighborhood. SEC tactical unit and US Marshals are staging two blocks away. Elena, are you in position?”
I looked around the house that my father had built, the home where I had nursed Theo, celebrated birthdays, and believed in love.
“I’m in position,” I typed back. “Do not breach until I give the command. I want them to commit the entire act on record.”
I walked into the basement, stepped inside the hidden storage room behind the wine cellar, and pulled up the live stream from the newly installed micro-cameras on my monitor.
At 10:58 A.M., the exterior camera feed went pitch black.

The macro had fired. The regular security system was completely blind.
Two minutes later, at precisely 11:00 A.M., the front door opened, and the chime echoed through the silent house.
