Chapter 3 - THE WEB OF CHARLOTTE

The silence that stretched between us in the foyer was thick with unsaid horrors. Charlotte’s hand hovered over her purse, her manicured fingers twitching. She looked at me, then past me, up the stairs toward the master bedroom, where the ghost of her son's depravity lingered like spoiled perfume.

"Well... isn't that nice," Charlotte stammered, forcing a shrill, nervous laugh. "Though, of course, you work so hard, Elena. You really should take this sudden free time to go to the spa! You look so... tired, darling. The bags under your eyes."

"Do I look tired, Charlotte?" I stepped closer, closing the distance until I was standing barely two feet from her. I could smell her lilac perfume—a scent I had once associated with holiday dinners, now forever ruined by its association with betrayal. "I feel wide awake. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen things with quite this much clarity."

Charlotte took a half-step back, her eyes narrowing as she tried to gauge how much ground she had lost. "Well, regardless, I promised Theo we’d go to the park. A grandmother’s promise is sacred, you know. Routine is so critical for a growing boy."

"Theo is staying home today," I said flatly.

"Elena, don't be ridiculous—"

"I said he is staying home." My voice didn't rise, but the absolute, merciless authority in it made Charlotte flinch. "He told me he had a nightmare last night. About secrets. He told me he was afraid that God was going to punish him because someone told him that bad boys break promises to family."

Charlotte’s face drained of every drop of color. Her foundation suddenly looked like chalk against her withered skin. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. For three agonizing seconds, the righteous church lady vanished, leaving behind only a cornered, vicious rodent.

"Children have such active imaginations," she whispered, her voice tightening like a drawn bowstring. "You shouldn't indulge his fantasies, Elena. It’s bad parenting. He makes things up when he gets fevers."

"He didn't make up the white robe, Charlotte."

The strike was clean. Charlotte physically recoiled, hitting her shoulders against the heavy oak front door. Her chest heaved, her hand trembling violently against her leather bag.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," she spat, her tone dropping all pretense of maternal affection. The venom seeped through, rancid and cold. "You’ve always been paranoid, Elena. Ever since Solomon married you. You hold your father's wealth over our heads like a whip, thinking everyone is trying to take what's yours."

"My father's wealth gave you a son who lives rent-free, drives a leased luxury SUV under my corporate account, and wears custom suits paid for by my commissions," I countered, taking another step forward until Charlotte had nowhere left to run. "You didn't just help him cheat, Charlotte. You turned off the cameras in my house. You managed his schedule. You stood look-out while another woman stripped in my bed, and then you used the fear of eternal damnation to silence my five-year-old child."

"You don't know anything!" she hissed, her face contorting into an ugly snarl. "You think you're so superior! Solomon was miserable with you! You and your father, acting like kings dispensing charity to the peasants! Jennifer is from a family that actually understands how to elevate a man, not castrate him!"

"There it is," I said, a faint, chilling smile touching my lips. "The truth always sounds so much better when you stop pretending to be a Christian, doesn't it?"

Charlotte lunged forward, her finger stabbing toward my face. "You touch a hair on my son's career, Elena, and I will destroy you! I have friends on the family court board. I will testify that you are an unstable, vindictive mother who poisons her child's mind! You will lose Theo!"

The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. I didn't back down. I didn't shout. I reached into my blazer pocket, pulled out my phone, and tapped the screen.

The screen lit up, showing a live audio feed. Marcus Vance’s forensic team was already recording through the smart-home hub’s emergency bridge, logging every word directly into a secure legal repository.

"Say that again, Charlotte," I whispered. "Tell me more about how you plan to perjure yourself on behalf of a son who needed his mommy to watch the door while he committed adultery in a house that doesn't belong to him."

Charlotte stared at the phone, her breath coming in ragged, wheezing gasps. She realized, too late, that the trap hadn't just been sprung—she had willingly walked straight into the cage and slammed the door shut behind her.

Without another word, she turned around, yanked the front door open with such force that the brass handle struck the drywall, and practically fell down the porch steps. She scrambled into her sedan, threw it into reverse, and tore out of the driveway, kicking up a storm of gravel and dust.

I stood on the porch, watching her red taillights disappear down the winding suburban road. My hands were shaking, not from fear, but from the raw, surging adrenaline of war.

My phone rang in my palm. It was Marcus, the senior investigator from my father's firm.

"Elena," Marcus said, his voice crackling through the Bluetooth speaker. "We pulled the local network logs remotely through the backdoor your father provided."

"What did you find?"

"It’s worse than you thought. The camera shutdowns weren't just random. They were scheduled via an automated macro running off a cloned tablet registered under Charlotte’s Apple ID. But that’s not all. During those blackout windows, the home Wi-Fi transferred massive encrypted zip files from Solomon’s personal laptop to an external server."

I froze. "What kind of files?"

"We’re cracking the hashes now," Marcus said grimly. "Solomon wasn't just bringing his mistress to your house to sleep with her, Elena. He was using your high-security home network—the one connected to your law firm's legal cloud—to smuggle proprietary insider trading documents for Cross & Hastings Capital. They were using your father's property as an offshore laundering nest."
