Chapter 6 - THE COURT OF PUBLIC OPINION

Within six hours of Tiffany’s courthouse press conference, the internet exploded into a full-scale digital wildfire.
Carefully edited snippets of video footage began circulating across TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter. The clips—selectively trimmed by Tiffany’s high-priced PR team—showed Margaret sternly refusing the champagne, followed by an out-of-context shot of Margaret turning away while Tiffany broke down in tears, cunningly cutting out the physical slap entirely.
Influencers and sensationalist daytime talk shows took the bait.
Headlines screamed: “Billionaire Mother-in-Law Ruins Dream Wedding Over $2,000 Bottle!” and “Elderly Matriarch Sued for $5 Million After Sabotaging Son’s Future.”
Local delivery trucks began refusing to service Margaret's farm. Strangers drove past the front gate, honking their horns, shouting obscenities, and throwing trash onto the manicured lawn.
Julian called his mother from a burner phone four times that evening.
When Margaret finally answered on speakerphone with Robert sitting beside her, Julian sounded frantic, his voice trembling on the edge of hysteria.
"Mom, please! Look at the news!" Julian pleaded. "Tiffany’s lawyer says if you agree to sign over the north pasture and pay a $500,000 civil settlement, she will drop the lawsuit, retract the media statements, and we can issue a joint statement saying this was all a private family misunderstanding! You just have to pay them, Mom! If you don't, they are going to take everything you have in court!"
Margaret looked at Robert, who simply smirked and shook his head.
"Julian," Margaret said calmly. "Do you truly believe a single word coming out of that woman's mouth?"
"She is my wife, Mom! We took vows!" Julian screamed. "Why are you being so stubborn?! Just give them the money so we can have our lives back!"
"I would rather burn every dollar I have to ash than give one more penny to a criminal family of extortionists," Margaret said. "And as for your vows, Julian—you made vows of honor to your late father that you broke the moment you stood by and watched another person strike me."
She hung up the phone without waiting for a reply.
"Are the files ready, Robert?" Margaret asked, turning to her attorney.
"Everything is digitized, verified, and sealed with forensic affidavits," Robert replied, opening his briefcase to reveal three identical encrypted flash drives. "The complete unedited 4K ballroom video with multi-channel ceiling microphone audio, the forged deed documents, the bank records showing Tiffany's unauthorized identity theft charges, and the secret audio recording of Gregory Holloway threatening you on this porch this morning."
"Who is our contact?"
"Victoria Sterling," Robert smiled warmly. "My niece. She happens to be the senior investigative anchor for National Nightly Expose, the highest-rated prime-time news broadcast in the country. She’s been investigating Gregory Holloway’s logistics fraud for six months. This is the smoking gun she needed."
At 8:00 PM that evening, while Tiffany was live-streaming from her luxury penthouse apartment, basking in the sympathy of hundreds of thousands of online followers and accepting tens of thousands of dollars in digital donations, the television broadcast switched to National Nightly Expose.
The screen lit up with the prestigious news logo, followed by the commanding presence of Victoria Sterling.
"Good evening. Today, social media was captivated by the viral story of the so-called 'Monster Mother-in-Law' who canceled a lavish luxury wedding. But tonight, we have obtained exclusive, unedited 4K surveillance footage, authenticated bank records, and forensic documents that expose the truth behind a predatory, multi-million-dollar family extortion syndicate."
Victoria looked straight into the camera.
"Here is what really happened at the Grandview Estate."
The screen split. For the next ten minutes, two million live television viewers—and millions more watching the simultaneous digital stream—watched the full, uncut master tape.
They saw Tiffany's haughty, sneering demands. They heard Margaret’s calm, dignified refusal after having already spent $45,000. They heard Tiffany's vile insults. And then, in crystal-clear high definition with crisp, bone-chilling audio, they watched Tiffany wind up and violently strike sixty-two-year-old Margaret Bennett across the face.
The broadcast didn't stop there.
Victoria brought up full-screen graphics of Tiffany’s fraudulent credit card charges under Margaret’s Social Security number—showing purchases of diamond tennis bracelets, luxury spa weekends, and payments on a leased Porsche. Then came the audio recording of Gregory Holloway bragging about the forged deed on Margaret's front porch.
"According to state prosecutors," Victoria concluded, "arrest warrants for grand larceny, identity theft, and felony fraud are being issued as we speak."
Across the city, inside her penthouse, Tiffany dropped her wine glass. It shattered across the hardwood floor, mirroring the champagne flute from the wedding night.

Her phone began ringing violently. It wasn't sympathetic followers.
It was her publicist dropping her instantly, her brand sponsors canceling six-figure contracts, and the county sheriff’s department informing her that new, non-bailable felony warrants had just been signed by the superior court judge.
