Chapter 2 - THE BLACKOUT CLAUSE

The venue manager, Arthur Vance, stood tall under the crystal chandeliers, holding a thick black leather folder stamped with the gold crest of the Grandview Estate. He didn't blink when Tiffany glared at him, her chest heaving with indignation beneath her custom lace bodice.

"I asked you a question, Arthur!" Tiffany snapped, her voice ringing out into the sudden, dead quiet of the ballroom. "Why did the music stop? Where are the servers going with the prime rib? Why are the main floodlights turned up like we’re in a high school cafeteria?"

Her mother, Evelyn, hurried over, clutching her designer clutch, followed by Tiffany’s father, Greg, whose face was flushed crimson with anger.

"This is completely unacceptable," Greg barked, stepping into Arthur’s personal space. "I am the father of the bride. We are paying you tens of thousands of dollars for a five-star luxury experience! I demand you restart the orchestra immediately and bring out the Laurent Reserve champagne!"

Arthur calmly opened the binder. He did not flinch. He turned a crisp white page, adjusted his silver-rimmed glasses, and pointed a manicured finger at the bottom signature line.

"Mr. Holloway, with all due respect, you have not paid a single dime to this venue," Arthur said, his voice carrying clearly through the silent room. "Every single line item—from the ballroom rental and security personnel to the bespoke floral arches, the fifteen-piece band, the five-course dinner service, and the premium open bar—was contracted and funded exclusively by Mrs. Margaret Bennett."

A wave of low gasps swept through the two hundred and fifty guests. Tiffany’s face drained of color, but her arrogant scowl quickly returned.

"Margaret is Julian’s mother! She gave us that money as a gift!" Tiffany shrieked. "She doesn't have the right to interfere with our reception!"

"Under Section Fourteen, Subsection B of our primary event agreement," Arthur continued evenly, his tone as cold as winter ice, "the signatory retains the unilateral right to terminate all auxiliary and primary services immediately in the event of documented physical abuse, breach of peace, or willful misconduct by attendees or honorees against the client. Mrs. Bennett exercised that exact clause precisely six minutes ago."

Arthur closed the binder with a sharp, echoing snap.

"Furthermore, Mrs. Bennett has formally withdrawn her security deposit and canceled the authorization on her corporate black card. As of 8:42 PM, this private estate is officially closed for the evening. You and your guests have fifteen minutes to collect your personal belongings and vacate the premises."

Panic rippled across the ballroom. Guests began whispering frantically. Relatives in couture gowns looked down at their half-eaten plates as waitstaff efficiently pulled away silver platters, boxed up unopened vintage wine bottles, and draped white canvas sheets over the dessert towers.

Julian stumbled forward from the edge of the dance floor, looking utterly shattered. "Arthur, please... wait. There’s been a misunderstanding. Where is my mother? Let me talk to her! Mom! Margaret!"

"Mrs. Bennett has already left the property via private town car," Arthur said, his gaze shifting to Julian with visible pity and quiet disgust. "And she left strict instructions with our security team. You are not to contact her through venue channels."

Tiffany’s father lunged toward Arthur, his finger jabbing into the air. "You can’t throw us out! We have a signed permit for the grounds until 2:00 AM! We have the luxury suites upstairs booked for the entire bridal party! We have the champagne breakfast tomorrow morning!"

"Those suites and that brunch were also canceled and refunded directly to Mrs. Bennett’s personal banking account five minutes ago," Arthur replied. "The electronic door locks have already been recoded. Security will escort anyone attempting to access the residential wing off the estate."

"No! No, this cannot be happening!" Tiffany screamed, grabbing her veil and ripping it from her hair in a fit of hysterical rage. She turned on Julian, shoving him hard in the chest. "Do something, Julian! Call your mother right now and make her fix this! She is humiliating me in front of everyone! My college friends, my father's business associates—everyone is watching!"

Julian fumbled with his tuxedo jacket, pulling out his iPhone with trembling fingers. He dialed Margaret's number once, twice, three times. Each time, the call went straight to a generic automated voicemail: “The number you have dialed is no longer accepting incoming calls from this caller.”

"She blocked me..." Julian whispered, staring blankly at the screen. "She actually blocked my number."

"Then call her bank! Call her lawyer!" Evelyn shrieked, her expensive facade melting into pure venom. "She cannot do this to our family! We spent months preparing this! We told everyone this was the social event of the season!"

"You didn't spend anything, Evelyn!" a woman’s voice called out from table four—one of Margaret’s longtime neighborhood friends, who was already picking up her purse with a satisfied smirk. "Margaret sold her late husband's heirloom acreage so your daughter could have five thousand white orchids, and you let that spoiled brat slap her across the face! You should be ashamed of yourselves!"

"Get out! All of you, get out!" Tiffany screamed at the guests, completely unraveling as several high-society influencers whipped out their phones, livestreaming the bride's total meltdown to hundreds of thousands of followers.

Suddenly, the heavy double oak doors of the grand foyer swung open.

Four uniformed officers from the county sheriff’s department stepped into the ballroom, their heavy tactical boots thudding against the polished marble floor.

Tiffany froze mid-rant. Greg stepped forward, attempting to smooth down his designer suit. "Officers, thank God you're here. We are dealing with an illegal lockout by the venue management—"

The lead officer, Sergeant Miller, held up a gloved hand, cutting Greg off instantly. His eyes swept across the room and locked directly onto Tiffany's disheveled white gown.

"We aren't here for a contract dispute, sir," Sergeant Miller stated coldly, unhooking a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "We received an emergency 911 dispatch regarding a felony third-degree assault on an elderly woman on these premises. We have reviewed the venue's security camera footage. Tiffany Holloway, turn around and place your hands behind your back."
