Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW OVER CHICAGO

Within forty-eight hours of the Drake Hotel gala, the Ashford empire imploded with catastrophic speed.

With Vanessa Cole singing like a canary in federal custody to save herself from a life sentence, federal agents seized the Ashford headquarters, frozen all domestic accounts, and raided their distribution warehouses across the Great Lakes. The lesser capos and street soldiers, smelling blood in the water, scattered or defected to the Morettis overnight.

Graham Ashford was a king without a kingdom. Stripped of his bodyguards, his assets, and his pride, he holed up in his family's ancestral manor in Lake Forest—the only property protected under a historic trust that the feds couldn't immediately touch.

Claire watched the collapse from the penthouse suite of the newly acquired Mercer Tower overlooking the Chicago River. She had systematically bought up every debt note, every defaulted mortgage, and every compromised shipping vessel the Ashford family had owned. She now controlled seventy percent of the commercial shipping entering the Midwest. She had won.

Yet, as she stood looking out at the gray, churning waters of Lake Michigan, there was no victory in her chest. Only an echoing silence.

Owen walked into the room, carrying a silver pocket watch he had found in the safe—an old heirloom engraved with the initials G.A.

"He sent this to the front desk this morning," Owen said, handing the watch to Claire. "Along with a letter."

Claire hesitated before taking the envelope. Inside was a single sheet of heavy parchment, covered in Graham’s familiar, jagged handwriting:

Claire,

I don't expect forgiveness. I don't deserve it. You took my son because I was a monster who didn't deserve to breathe the same air as him. Everything I owned has been surrendered to your attorneys. The Mercer family now owns Chicago. But you need to take Owen and leave the country tonight. Vanessa’s uncle, Salvatore Moretti, has mobilized six hit squads. They know you control the shipping docks, and they know you are Graham Ashford’s only vulnerability. They are coming for you. Let me hold the line at the river. Let me die doing the one thing I failed to do five years ago: protecting you.

Claire dropped the letter onto the marble desk, her pulse spiking.

May you like

"Marcus!" she called out.

The double doors burst open, but it wasn't Marcus. Two masked men in tactical gear kicked the doors off their hinges, assault rifles raised.
