Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT WARNING

The handle rattled before the heavy oak door swung inward, revealing not Graham, but Marcus Vance—the ruthless, silver-haired underboss of the rival Moretti syndicate and a man whose presence in a hospital room in broad daylight meant someone was marked to die. Two towering men in tailored charcoal suits flanked the threshold, their right hands buried inside their lapels. Daniel Whitaker instantly went gray, clutching the leather folder to his chest like a flimsy shield, his manicured fingernails biting into the grain.

Claire pulled the thin hospital blanket tighter against her shivering collarbones, instinctively shifting her sore body between the door and the acrylic bassinet where Owen slept. Every muscle in her abdomen screamed from the traumatic delivery, but adrenaline flooded her system with pure fire.

"Mr. Whitaker," Marcus said smoothly, his voice carrying the gravelly calm of a man who had orchestrated street executions before breakfast. "You are trespassing on contested ground. Leave the pen and the papers on the side table, take your tailored hide out of this corridor, and forget you ever drew breath within five miles of this maternity ward."

"Marcus," Daniel stammered, backing toward the curtained window, his polished oxford shoes squeaking on the sterile linoleum. "This is an internal Ashford matter. Graham signed off on the release forms. I have legal precedent—"

Marcus didn’t raise his voice; he simply tilted his chin. The larger of his two bodyguards stepped forward, grabbed Daniel by the scruff of his Italian wool collar, and bodily hauled him toward the hallway. Daniel’s briefcase hit the floor with a hollow thud, spilling Graham’s legal demands across the tile: five hundred thousand dollars, a monthly stipend, and a non-disclosure clause broad enough to choke a courtroom.

The door clicked shut, sealing Marcus inside the room with Claire and her hours-old son.

Claire stared at him, her pulse drumming against her hollow temples. "Did Graham send you to finish what the hemorrhaging didn't?"

A slow, humorless smile touched the corners of Marcus’s thin lips. "If Graham Ashford had the tactical sense to send me, he wouldn't be sitting in a private booth at The Gilded Lily right now, feeding beluga caviar to Vanessa Cole while his empire rots from the inside out." Marcus stepped closer, his polished dress shoes making no sound. He pulled a delicate antique gold locket from his pocket and laid it gently on the edge of Owen’s bassinet.

Claire recognized the intricate engraving immediately—the crest of the Mercer family, her late grandfather’s personal seal, lost nearly twenty years ago during the corporate takeover that broke her father's spirit.

"Your father wasn't just a bankrupt manufacturer, Claire," Marcus murmured, looking down at the sleeping infant with an expression that bordered on reverent. "And Graham’s grandfather didn't force that marriage to save you. He forced it because your bloodline holds the master keys to the offshore shipping registries through the Port of Montreal—registries the Ashford family has been desperately trying to crack open for three generations."

Claire's breath caught in her throat. "What are you talking about?"

"Graham doesn't know what you're actually worth because he's blinded by Vanessa’s poisoned whispers. But Vanessa knows," Marcus warned, his gaze snapping back to Claire with terrifying intensity. "She knows you survived the delivery. And within forty-eight hours, when Graham signs those absolute custody waivers, Vanessa will ensure an unmarked van intercepts your ambulance before you ever reach O'Hare. She cannot let an Ashford heir with Mercer blood survive."

Owen let out a soft whimper, his tiny fingers twitching against the swaddle. Marcus reached inside his coat, but instead of a weapon, he produced a set of forged Swiss passports, two commercial flight vouchers routed through Toronto to Zurich, and an encrypted satellite phone.

"You have six hours before the hospital shifts change and Graham's loyalists realize Daniel never returned to the compound," Marcus whispered. "You can stay here and die as Graham’s discarded wife, or you can walk out that freight elevator with me, claim the legacy your father hid from the underworld, and raise this boy to be the king who burns the Ashford syndicate to ash."

Claire looked at the locket, then down at Owen’s peaceful face. The lingering ghost of the woman who had begged Graham to love her vanished completely. She reached out, took the Swiss passport, and swung her bare feet onto the cold, unforgiving floor.
