Chapter 4 - SECRETS BURIED IN ASHES

The air inside the vehicle vanished entirely. My tongue felt thick, paralyzed by the sound of my real name falling from his lips with such deadly intimacy.

"I don't... I don't know what you're talking about," I stammered, pressing my back flat against the passenger door, my fingers searching uselessly for a door handle that had been electronically locked.

Alessandro leaned forward slowly, resting his forearms on his knees. The sheer proximity of him made my pulse race wildly. Even in the dim light of the tinted windows, the raw power and lethal grace of the mafia heir were overwhelming.

"Did you really think you could lie to me in my own city?" Alessandro asked, his voice deceptively soft, like velvet over steel. He reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a manila folder, tossing it onto the leather console between us.

The folder fell open. Staring back at me was my high school yearbook photo, my forged social security documents, my nursing school transcripts, and photographs of my father's funeral.

"Elizabeth Vance. Daughter of Thomas Vance, the chief auditor who stole twenty million dollars in bearer bonds from my late father’s estate before crashing his sedan into a concrete divider on the I-90," Alessandro recited coldly. "You faked your identity, took a low-level catering job, and engineered a clumsy spill in a ballroom just to get into my suite."

"I didn't engineer the spill!" The words tore out of my throat before I could stop them. "And my father never stole anything! He was an honest man who found out your family was laundering cartel money through civilian charities, and your uncle had him murdered!"

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Alessandro’s amber eyes flared with a dangerous, golden fire. He didn't yell. He didn't strike. Instead, he reached out, his large, warm hand cupping the side of my neck, his thumb resting directly over my frantic carotid pulse. The heat of his touch was electric, confusing, and terrifying all at once.

"Careful, Elizabeth," he whispered, leaning so close I could feel the warmth of his breath against my parted lips. "You are playing in a league where accusations without proof will get your throat cut in an alley. If my uncle Marco knew you were alive and poking around the Syndicate’s archives, you wouldn't have survived the night after the gala."

"Then why didn't you hand me over to him?" I choked out, tears of anger and fear stinging the backs of my eyes. "Why bring me here?"

His gaze dipped briefly to my lips, a flicker of raw, unrestrained hunger breaking through his cold composure. For a split second, I saw the vulnerable man from Room 1520—the man who had held me against his chest in the dark, whispering about how heavy his crown felt.

"Because despite your pathetic espionage," Alessandro murmured, his thumb lightly stroking the hollow beneath my jaw, "you spent six hours in my bed making me believe you were the only real thing left in this city. And I don't discard what belongs to me."

My stomach suddenly heaved in violent protest. The wave of morning sickness hit me with the force of a freight train.

The color drained from my face. I clapped a hand over my mouth, gasping for air, doubling over in the seat.

Alessandro’s demeanor shifted instantly. His hand gripped my shoulder, his brow furrowing in genuine alarm. "Elizabeth? What’s wrong with you?"

"I... I need air," I gasped, fighting the bile rising in my throat. "Please... stop the car."

Alessandro pounded the partition glass. "Matteo, pull over! Now!"

The SUV screeched to a halt beside an empty warehouse district near the docks. Matteo unlocked the doors, and I tumbled out onto the damp pavement, falling to my knees behind a concrete pillar and violently vomiting into the storm drain.

Alessandro was beside me in an instant, his expensive Italian suit brushing the dirty concrete as he knelt, gathering my hair back with one hand while his other hand steadied my trembling back.

"Get medical on the radio," Alessandro barked over his shoulder at Matteo.

"No! No doctors!" I cried out in panic, wiping my mouth with the back of my trembling sleeve, terrified that a mafia physician would run blood tests. "It’s just nerves. The stress... you threatening my life... it made me sick."

Alessandro stood slowly, helping me to my feet. But his eyes were no longer cold. They narrowed with razor-sharp analytical precision, traveling down from my pale face to the hand I had instinctively pressed over my lower abdomen.

"You haven't eaten all morning," he observed, his voice dropping into a register that made my soul tremble. "Your skin is clammy. And you smell different."

"I smell like diner grease and nausea," I retorted bitterly, pulling away from his grasp.

"No," Alessandro whispered, stepping closer, towering over me until his shadow engulfed me entirely. "You smell like changes in blood chemistry. I know that scent. My sister smelled the same way before she announced her first child."

His eyes locked onto mine with terrifying clarity.

"Elizabeth... are you pregnant?"
