Chapter 11 - A PORCH LIGHT IN THE DARK

Eighteen months later.
The summer breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and fresh ocean salt across the private patio of our villa in Sicily.
Down in the courtyard, the Syndicate business was still handled, but it was a reformed empire. With Marco’s illicit corruption wiped clean, Alessandro had restructured the family's assets into legitimate international shipping, real estate, and medical philanthropy—honoring both his father's legacy and the memory of mine.
Liam was now the head of emergency medical logistics for the Vitali Foundation in Chicago, thriving in the life he had always deserved, and visiting us every summer without fear.
I stood on the stone balcony wearing a flowing white sundress, watching the sun dip below the Mediterranean horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of gold, violet, and crimson.
From behind me, small, joyful giggles echoed through the open French doors.
A handsome, dark-haired little boy with piercing amber eyes came toddling out onto the terrace on unsteady little feet, clutching a wooden toy boat.
"Mama! Look!" Leo squealed, holding up the boat proudly.
"Did Papa build that with you?" I laughed, kneeling down and catching our son in my arms, kissing his soft, chubby cheek.
"Papa made it fast!" Leo beamed.
Heavy, familiar footsteps sounded behind us. A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around both of us from behind, pulling us into a solid, protective embrace.
Alessandro rested his chin on my shoulder, kissing the sensitive spot beneath my ear. He wore a simple linen shirt, his dark hair ruffled by the sea breeze, looking entirely at peace. There were no guns at his hip, no tension in his broad shoulders.
"Did you tell him how we met?" Alessandro murmured, his deep voice sending that same sweet shiver down my spine that it had two years ago in a Chicago ballroom.
"I told him his father was very clumsy and spilled champagne everywhere," I teased, tilting my head back to look up at him.
Alessandro chuckled, a rich, genuine sound that lit up his handsome face. He took Leo into one arm, tossing him gently into the air, making the toddler shriek with delight, before setting him down to play on the soft grass near the terrace.
Alessandro turned back to me, taking both of my hands in his. On my left ring finger, a breathtaking emerald-cut diamond sparkled in the dying sunlight—a symbol of a vow he had made before God, his family, and the world six months ago.
"You remember what you told me that night in Room 1520?" Alessandro asked softly, his amber eyes glowing with infinite tenderness. "When we were just two lonely people hiding from our lives?"
"I told you I missed having someone leave a porch light on for me," I whispered, resting my head against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.
Alessandro smiled, lifting my chin and pressing a soft, lingering kiss to my lips that tasted of sweet wine and forever.
"Look over there, my love," he whispered, gesturing toward the entrance of our villa.

Above the grand stone archway, a warm, golden lantern glowed brightly against the falling twilight, cutting through the shadows of the evening, illuminating the path home.
"As long as I draw breath," Alessandro promised, wrapping his arms around me and holding me tight against his heart, "your light will never go out."
