Chapter 6 - GHOSTS OF THE HARBOR

The rain battered the windshield in violent sheets as the Maybach tore through the industrial districts of Queens, heading toward the derelict shipping docks along the East River. Behind us, three high-performance black sedans with tinted windows clung to our tail, their high beams cutting through the downpour like predatory eyes.

"They have GPS trackers on the public traffic grid," Elena said, her fingers flying over an encrypted tablet she had pulled from her satchel. "Marco paid off the city transit surveillance hub. They're predicting our route."

"Let them follow," I said, my voice steady as I drifted the three-ton armored vehicle around a sharp harbor bend. "They think we're running. They don't know where this road leads."

Mia was babbling softly in the backseat, clutching her stuffed rabbit, completely oblivious to the fact that high-caliber rounds were chipping away at the bulletproof glass behind her head.

"Elena," I said without taking my eyes off the slick asphalt. "The drive Matteo gave you. What else is on it?"

Elena looked over at me, her green eyes filled with a mixture of grief and resolve. "The real identity of the Zurich syndicate's mastermind. It isn't a Swiss banker, Alessandro. It’s Don Carmine Falcone. The man who raised you after your father died."

The revelation felt like a physical blow. Carmine Falcone was the patriarch of the Five Families, the elder don who had put the crown on my head when I was just twenty-eight. He had played the role of a loving mentor while orchestrating the slaughter of my family from the shadows.

"Carmine wants Mia because of the inheritance trust," Elena continued, her voice trembling. "Your father left a forty-percent controlling stake of the international shipping docks to Matteo's direct bloodline. If Mia dies, the entire asset reverts to the syndicate council—which Carmine controls. That’s why Matteo was killed. That’s why they hunted us."

I looked in the rearview mirror, meeting the innocent gaze of the little girl who held the legacy of my family in her tiny hands.

"Nobody touches this child," I said, each word carved from obsidian. "Not Marco. Not Falcone. Not the entire underworld."

We pulled into an abandoned naval shipyard surrounded by towering rusty shipping containers and rotting piers. The storm raged overhead, lightning cracking across the black sky.

"Get Mia into the harbor master's reinforced vault at the end of Pier 9," I ordered Elena, handing her extra magazines and my personal encrypted satellite phone. "Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except my voice."

"What are you going to do?" Elena asked, her eyes wide with fear and unspoken affection.

I stepped out into the torrential rain, the cold water drenching my tailored suit as I pulled two fresh magazines from my coat. "I'm going to end the hunt."
