Chapter 1 - THE BLOODLINE IN THE SHADOWS

The fourteenth floor of the Duca Tower had always been a sanctuary of ruthless efficiency, paved in imported Carrara marble and shielded by two-inch ballistic glass that overlooked the rain-drenched neon skyline of Manhattan. I had made my name across two decades of merciless street warfare, rising from the scarred alleys of Brooklyn to the summit of the Eastern Seaboard’s most feared syndicate. Every man in my employ understood the singular law of Alessandro Duca: my word was absolute law, and trespassing on my private floor during an executive operation was punishable by instantaneous execution.

Yet, as the heavy mahogany door swung wide and the cold steel of my silenced Glock aligned with the center of the hallway, the violence in my veins hit a frozen wall.

Sitting on the icy marble floor was a tiny girl no older than eight months, wearing a tattered pink onesie with faded cartoon bears. She held a grey plush rabbit missing an ear. When she saw the muzzle of my weapon, she didn't scream or flinch. She simply tilted her head, her giant, honey-brown eyes locking onto mine with an eerie familiarity that sent a violent tremor through my spine. A bubbling, innocent giggle broke the suffocating tension, and she reached out her tiny hands, clumsily crawling directly toward my bespoke Italian shoes.

Before my brain could rationalize the impossibility of an infant inside a maximum-security fortress, a choked, agonizing gasp tore out from the darkness of the utility closet fifty feet down the hall.

Clack-clack.

The brutal, unmistakable metallic sound of a 12-gauge tactical shotgun being racked echoed off the walls. Heavy military boots ground into the floor as a hulking figure stepped out from the blind spot behind the elevator shaft, cloaked in black tactical gear and wearing a Kevlar balaclava.

"Step away from the bastard child, Duca!" a gravelly voice roared through a voice modulator. "Or I blow you and that piece of trash to hell!"

May you like

Instinct took over before thought could interfere. I lunged forward, sliding across the polished floor on my knees, scooping the baby girl into my left arm, pressing her tiny face firmly into my chest, and raised my Glock with my right hand just as the hallway exploded with orange flame.
