Chapter 6 - THE FINAL DOSAGE

The helicopter above banked hard to the left, its pilot realizing the contract was dead, and fled into the dark clouds over the valley.
Silence crashed over the mountaintop, broken only by the howling wind and Julian’s ragged coughing on the frozen concrete.
I dropped my gun and fell to my knees beside my brother. He looked up at me through bruised, hollow eyes, tears freezing on his pale cheeks.
“Elena...” he choked out, his voice cracked with shame and exhaustion. “I’m sorry. God, I’m so sorry. Vincent told me they would kill you three years ago if I didn't synthesize the neurotoxin for the Morettis. I thought I was protecting you. I tried to dilute the batch tonight—that’s why the vial didn't shatter instantly. I wanted to give you time to stop Damian from drinking it.”
I wrapped my arms around his shaking shoulders, burying my face in his neck, the agonizing grief of three years of mourning washing away in a flood of hot tears. “You’re alive. You’re alive, you idiot.”
Damian stood over us, holstering his weapon. He looked down at Julian, his expression severe, calculating, yet devoid of the lethal fury he had shown Vincent.
“Your brother’s testimony will dismantle Salvatore Moretti’s federal immunity in forty-eight hours,” Damian said quietly. “The U.S. Attorney has been waiting for the chemist who cooked their illicit distribution records. Julian is going into federal protective custody under my personal security detail.”
Julian looked up at Damian, terrified. “You’re... you’re letting me live?”
“You saved Elena’s life on this roof,” Damian replied, stepping closer, his intense gaze shifting down to me. “Anyone who protects what belongs to me stays alive.”
Two days later, the storm had passed.
The morning sun reflected off the pristine white snow blankets covering the Berkshires. Down in Boston, the morning news was dominated by a single headline: Billionaire Damian Cross Exposes Multimillion-Dollar Mob Fraud Inside Crosswell Holdings; Moretti Cartel Leaders Indicted Under RICO Act.
Julian was safe in a private medical facility in Vermont, guarded by Marcus’s recovered elite team. My name had been completely cleared; federal agents had formally apologized for the breach inquiry.
I stood on the stone terrace of the mountain house, wrapped in a heavy cashmere sweater, a steaming mug of tea cradled in my hands. The air was crisp, clean, and entirely free of smoke and blood.
Strong, warm arms slid around my waist from behind.
Damian pulled me back against his broad chest, resting his chin lightly against the crown of my head. The tension that had defined his posture for the last forty-eight hours was finally gone, replaced by a deep, steady rhythm that set my heart hammering for an entirely different reason.
“The board of directors met this morning,” Damian murmured against my ear, his voice sending a shiver of pure electricity down my spine. “They voted unanimously to appoint a new Chief Executive of Crosswell Medical Operations.”
I turned in his embrace, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. “Who did they pick?”
A slow, devastating smile curved Damian’s lips. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box, placing it in my hand.
I opened it. Inside was a platinum executive access badge stamped with the Crosswell seal, bearing my photo and a brand-new title: Dr. Elena Vance, Director of Clinical Operations and Managing Partner.
And nestled beside the badge was a breathtaking, flawless emerald ring surrounded by diamonds.
“You run the clinics now, Elena. All twenty-four of them across New England,” Damian said softly, taking the ring from the box and slipping it onto my finger. It fit perfectly. “No more hiding in the emergency room at midnight. No more taking orders from corrupt administrators.”
My breath caught. “Damian... this is worth a fortune. And what does this ring mean?”
His hands moved to my hips, lifting me slightly until our faces were inches apart. His eyes burned with an open, unapologetic passion that took my breath away.

“It means you saved my life twice,” Damian whispered, his lips brushing against mine with an intoxicating, possessive tenderness. “It means the entire underworld now knows that the woman who holds the antidote to my poison is the only woman who will ever rule beside me. You’re not just my cure, Elena. You’re my future.”
When his mouth claimed mine, there was no fear, no shadows, and no blood. Only the burning heat of a man who owned a city, and the woman who had conquered his heart.
