Chapter 4 - WHISPERS IN THE SHADOWS

The inside of the mountain retreat was vast, silent, and suffocatingly luxurious. High vaulted ceilings of dark cedar, towering stone fireplaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over a sheer granite drop into the misty valley below. It was a fortress disguised as a palace.
Damian led me into a massive master bathroom, running hot water into a porcelain tub before pulling a complete trauma kit from a walnut cabinet. He didn't summon guards or staff; we were entirely alone.
“Sit,” he commanded softly, pointing to a leather stool beside the counter.
I sat, the adrenaline finally crashing out of my system, leaving every muscle in my body aching. Damian took a sterile wipe, soaked it in antiseptic, and gently tilted my chin upward. His touch was surprisingly tender for a man whose hands had ended three lives an hour earlier. He carefully cleaned the blood from my forehead, his thumb tracing the cut along my hairline.
“You’re trembling,” he murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes.
“My brother is alive and working for the cartel that just tried to assassinate you,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “And you brought me to an isolated cabin in the mountains. Tell me, Damian... am I your guest, or am I your hostage?”
Damian paused, his fingers lingering against the soft curve of my jaw. The heat between us was sudden, suffocating, and terrifyingly real. For two years, I had watched him walk through the clinic with an aura of untouchable authority, wondering what kind of man lived behind the expensive suits and cold steel eyes. Now, standing inches away with his shirt unbuttoned and his hair damp from the storm, the raw power of him made it difficult to breathe.
“If you were my hostage, you’d be handcuffed to a water pipe in the cellar,” Damian whispered, leaning closer until I could feel the heat of his breath against my skin. “You’re here because out there, you’re a target. The Morettis need you dead so you can’t tell me how your credentials were stolen. And my own syndicate wants you dead because they think you tried to murder their boss.”
“Then why are you protecting me?”
“Because the moment you walked into my penthouse in that dress tonight, Elena, I stopped seeing a quiet nurse.” His thumb brushed across my lower lip, sending an electric shock straight to my core. “I saw the only person in this city who looks at me without fear or greed. And I protect what belongs to me.”
Before I could process the possessiveness in his words, the high-pitched chirp of an encrypted satellite radio broke the silence from the bedroom desk.
Damian’s demeanor shifted back to ice in an instant. He stepped back, wiping his hands on a towel, and walked into the study to answer it. I quietly stood, padding barefoot across the thick wool rugs, stopping just outside the door frame to listen.
“Speak,” Damian said into the receiver.
“Boss, it’s Marcus,” came the strained, raspy voice over the speaker. He was speaking through an oxygen mask from an ICU bed. “The surgical team pulled the bullet fragments from my shoulder. The flutter valve the nurse put in saved my life. The doctors said another ninety seconds and my heart would have stopped.”
“Good. What did you pull from the highway shooters' phones?”
“That’s why I’m calling,” Marcus wheezed. “The hit wasn't ordered by the Moretti family boss, Salvatore. The burner phones belonged to an internal shell company registered under Crosswell Holdings. The contract on Elena Vance was authorized three hours before the gala even started.”
My heart seized in my chest.
“Who authorized the payment, Marcus?” Damian’s voice dropped to a lethal, flat pitch.
“Your second-in-command. Vincent Vance.”
I gasped, pressing my hand against my mouth to stifle the sound. Vincent wasn't just Damian's trusted lieutenant and chief financial officer—he was my uncle. The man who paid for my nursing school tuition after my parents died. The man who had recommended me for the job at Crosswell Clinic in the first place.
“Vincent was using Julian's old laboratory accounts to synthesize the neurotoxin,” Marcus continued, coughing weakly. “He planned to kill you tonight with the champagne, frame Elena to make it look like an internal family vendetta, and then have the cleaners wipe her out on the highway. That way, he steps into the power vacuum as the grieving uncle who takes over both the syndicate and the Crosswell pharmaceutical empire.”
“Where is Vincent now?” Damian asked, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the edge of the desk.
“He just mobilized twenty men from the Boston docks,” Marcus whispered frantically. “He pulled the GPS tracker off my phone before the ambulance moved me. He knows the coordinates to the mountain house, Damian. He’s coming to finish both of you!”
Suddenly, the power throughout the entire compound died.

The lights clicked off. The hum of the climate control vanished. The compound was plunged into pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the pale moonlight reflecting off the snow outside.
Far down the mountain driveway, the low, throaty rumble of multiple heavy diesel engines echoed through the valley.
