Chapter 9 - LOCKED IN THE CELLAR

The night of the Centennial Gala arrived with the force of a cultural phenomenon.

Lincoln Center was bathed in golden searchlights that pierced the Manhattan night sky. Hundreds of paparazzi, foreign dignitaries, and global artistic directors crowded the red carpet. Outside, a massive digital billboard displayed live footage of the VIP arrivals.

Inside the backstage labyrinth of the David H. Koch Theater, the tension was thick enough to choke on.

Victoria Blake paced the corridor outside Dressing Room 1, where Vanessa sat in front of a three-way vanity mirror having her makeup touched up by a team of stylists. Vanessa wore an opulent, diamond-encrusted tutu, but her hands were shaking so badly that her manicurist struggled to apply her nail gloss.

"Pull yourself together, Vanessa!" Victoria hissed, shutting the dressing room door. "The District Attorney is sitting in Box Tier 1 with Julian Thorne. The police have already subpoenaed the building security logs! If you do not win the fellowship unanimously tonight, our family’s reputation is completely finished!"

"I can't beat her if she dances that Stravinsky piece, Mother!" Vanessa cried out, her voice cracking with hysteria. "I saw the leaked rehearsal clip from Thorne’s estate! She’s better than me! Everyone knows it!"

Victoria’s eyes narrowed into terrifying, cold obsidian. "She won't be dancing anything tonight."

Victoria pulled out an encrypted burner phone and sent a one-word text: NOW.

Down in the lower backstage corridor, Emily stood alone near the stage-right wings, holding her garment bag containing the Firebird costume. Miles and Sarah had gone to the audio booth to deliver the master orchestra score to the conductor.

A stage technician wearing a headset and an academy lanyard approached Emily quickly. "Miss Carter? Master Thorne needs you in the lower prop vault immediately. There’s an issue with your performance registration waiver."

"Master Thorne is down there?" Emily asked, frowning. "He usually stays near the judges' box."

"He was reviewing the historical props for your entrance. Please, we only have fifteen minutes before curtain call."

Suspecting nothing, Emily followed the technician down the dimly lit spiral concrete stairs leading into the sub-basement of the theater—a forgotten maze of old stage machinery, heavy iron pipes, and locked storage rooms.

The technician led her to a heavy steel fire door labeled VAULT 4B.

"In here," he said, opening the door.

Emily stepped into the pitch-black room. "Master Thorne?"

SLAM!

The heavy steel door slammed shut behind her.

Emily spun around, dropping her garment bag. She grabbed the brass handle and pulled with all her strength, but the electronic lock clicked into place with a sickening beep.

"Hey! Open the door!" Emily pounded on the reinforced steel with both fists. "Open this door right now!"

On the other side, the heavy sound of a metal deadbolt sliding into place echoed through the corridor, followed by the retreating footsteps of the technician.

Emily pulled out her phone from her pocket.

No Service. The concrete bunker was completely shielded from cellular signals.

She looked at her wristwatch.

7:45 PM.

The gala began at 8:00 PM. Her performance slot was scheduled for 8:25 PM.

If she was not on stage when the conductor raised his baton, she would be officially declared a "No Show," and the fellowship would automatically default to Vanessa Blake.

Upstairs, the heavy velvet house curtains parted to thunderous applause as the master of ceremonies took the stage.
