Chapter 6 - THE VIRAL TRAP

The entire auditorium turned toward the woman walking down the center aisle. Whispers exploded across the room. Several elderly patrons in the front row squinted, their jaws dropping as they recognized the legendary cheekbones and aristocratic poise of a woman they had presumed dead or vanished decades ago.

"Sarah?" Julian Thorne whispered, his silver cane trembling in his hand. He stepped out from behind the judges' table, his cold exterior completely shattering. "Sarah... is it truly you?"

Sarah stopped at the edge of the orchestra pit. She looked at Julian Thorne, her eyes filled with twenty years of unspoken grief. "Yes, Julian. It’s me."

Victoria Blake slammed her hands onto the table, her face contorting with rage. "This is an outrage! Security, escort this trespasser out of the building! She has no standing here!"

"She has every standing here!" Thorne roared, his voice shaking the crystal chandeliers above. "Sit down, Victoria, or I will have the Metropolitan Police remove you from this board before the sun sets!"

Victoria slowly sank into her chair, her eyes burning with pure hatred.

Sarah turned her gaze up to the stage, looking at Emily, who was still kneeling on the blood-soaked floor, trembling with shock.

"Twenty-two years ago," Sarah spoke, her voice carrying effortlessly through the acoustic hall, "I was the principal dancer chosen for the Paris Residency. Victoria knew she couldn't beat me on the floor. So the night before our departure, she planted the Blake Family Diamond Trophy in my locker, paid off the building supervisor to corroborate her lie, and had the board strip me of my title, my scholarship, and my career."

The audience erupted into chaotic murmurings. Critics began frantically typing on their laptops.

"You have no proof of these slanderous lies!" Victoria shouted, her voice shrill. "You were a thief then, and you are a parasite now!"

"The building supervisor who took your bribe was Arthur Jenkins," Sarah replied with icy composure. "He passed away three months ago, Victoria. But before he died, he signed a sworn, notarized confession detailing the fifty thousand dollars you wired into his offshore account to destroy my life. That confession is currently in the hands of the District Attorney’s office."

Victoria’s face lost all color. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

On stage, Emily looked at her mother, the puzzle pieces of her entire life suddenly snapping into place. The constant moving. The fear of the stage. The effortless way her mother had corrected her posture at the kitchen counter when she was five years old. Her mother hadn't hidden from ballet because she hated it—she had hidden to protect Emily from the monstrous empire that had destroyed her.

"Emily," Thorne called out softly, looking up at the young girl on the stage. "Come down here, child."

Emily tried to stand, but the moment her full weight hit her left foot, the pain caused her knee to buckle. She collapsed onto the floorboards with a sharp cry of agony.

Miles Vance leaped over the orchestra barrier, sprinting onto the stage before security could react. He slid onto his knees beside Emily and gently supported her shoulders.

"Emily! What happened?" Miles asked, his face pale with panic.

He looked down at her feet and froze. The entire left shoe was soaked in dark, thick crimson. Miles quickly untied the satin ribbons and pulled off the shoe.

A collective gasp of pure horror echoed through the entire auditorium.

Shards of green and clear glass were embedded deep into the flesh of Emily’s sole, surrounded by deep lacerations. When Miles tipped the shoe upside down, a shower of crushed glass and blood fell onto the pristine white stage floor.

"Someone poisoned her shoes with crushed glass," Miles yelled, holding up the bloody pointe shoe for the entire room—and the cameras—to see. "This wasn't an accident. This was premeditated assault!"

In the wings, Vanessa took two steps back, trembling violently as the cameras in the front row swung toward her. Madison and Chloe immediately backed away from Vanessa, leaving her standing alone under the harsh backstage work lights.

"Master Thorne," the lead critic from the National Guild stood up, his face grim. "This audition cannot proceed under these conditions. A criminal investigation must be launched immediately."

Victoria Blake suddenly grabbed her daughter’s arm, her composure breaking into frantic survival instincts. "My daughter knows nothing about this! This is a setup! We are leaving!"

"You will go nowhere, Victoria," Thorne said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "The police have already been summoned to secure the perimeter and review the security footage outside the dressing rooms."

Thorne turned to the medical team rushing onto the stage. "Get Miss Carter to the Presbyterian Orthopedic Ward immediately. Call Dr. Harrison—tell him I am paying for the best microsurgeon in the country."

As the paramedics lifted Emily onto the stretcher, she looked into the wings.

Vanessa Blake was standing against the wall, clutching her phone. Her eyes weren't filled with remorse—they were filled with cornered, feral desperation. Vanessa tapped her screen once, hitting Upload.

Within three minutes, a heavily edited video surfaced on TikTok and Instagram, filmed from the night before. The video had been manipulated to show Emily shoving Vanessa to the ground in the empty studio, accompanied by the caption: “Violent squatter attacks Whitmore heiress and tries to extort money before staging a fake injury at the National Auditions.”
