Chapter 9 - BLOOD ON THE SNOW-WHITE HEARTH

The air in the living room grew rapidly hot as the floorboards began to smoke, acrid gray fumes seeping through the baseboards from the burning cellar below. The heat was intense, warping the glass ornaments on the massive Christmas tree.
Shawn did not flinch. His mind operated with hyper-focused adrenaline. "You think you win with this land, Vance?" Shawn said, his voice ringing with absolute, mocking authority. "You're playing for pennies."
Vance’s eyes narrowed slightly, his finger resting on the hair-trigger. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"You think I'm just an employee at a trucking company?" Shawn stepped forward half an inch, projecting the commanding presence of an executive who commanded boardrooms across the nation. "I own Apex Logistics Group. My company's net worth is over eighty million dollars. My private legal and security division in Columbus has a live tracker on my personal satellite phone in my pocket. Every word spoken in this room for the last fifteen minutes has been recorded and transmitted directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Pittsburgh."
Vance’s face paled for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting toward Shawn's jacket pocket. It was a bluff—the cell towers were down—but the hesitation was all Shawn needed.
"You're lying!" Vance roared, his grip tensing on the revolver.
In that exact split second, Brenda screamed and lunged from the floor like a wild animal.
She hurled her entire body at Vance's knees, tackling him around the thighs with desperate, frantic strength. "Run, Shawn! Run!" she shrieked.
BANG!
The revolver discharged with a deafening blast. The heavy bullet struck the wooden mantelpiece above the fireplace, showering the room in flying brick dust and burning wood splinters.
Vance cursed violently, bringing the heavy steel barrel of the gun down across Brenda’s shoulder, knocking her to the floor. But before he could aim a second shot, Shawn was already upon him.
Shawn closed the distance in a single violent stride. He seized Vance's gun hand with both palms, slamming the criminal's wrist against the stone fireplace hearth with bone-snapping force. The revolver clattered into the burning coals of the fire.
Vance threw a vicious left hook, his fist catching Shawn across the cheekbone, splitting the skin. Shawn absorbed the blow without stepping back. Channeling twelve years of buried regret, grief, and unyielding rage, Shawn drove a devastating right hook directly into Vance’s jaw.
The impact sounded like a baseball bat hitting a leather sack. Vance’s head snapped back, his knees buckling. Shawn followed through with a crushing knee to the midsection, driving the breath from Vance’s lungs, and hurled him bodily across the room. Vance crashed through the glass coffee table, collapsing into a heap of shattered glass and splintered wood, completely unconscious.
At that moment, the floor near the kitchen gave way with an explosive roar.
Flames erupted through the gaping hole, licking up the walls, instantly igniting the dry pine needles of the Christmas tree. The room became an inferno within seconds. Thick, suffocating black smoke filled the ceiling, descending rapidly toward the floor.
Shawn coughed violently, shielding his eyes from the blistering heat. He turned toward the fireplace where Brenda lay semi-conscious on the rug, clutching her bleeding shoulder.
"Shawn..." Brenda wheezed, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at the roaring wall of fire blocking the front door. "Leave me... I deserve this..."
"Shut up!" Shawn roared.
He bent down, scooped his sister up into his arms, and turned toward the large bay window facing the front yard. The glass was too thick to break with an arm, so Shawn gripped a heavy brass floor lamp, hurled it through the center pane, shattering the window into a million glittering shards.
Wrapping his wool coat over Brenda’s head to protect her from the jagged glass, Shawn vaulted through the broken window, tumbling out into the deep, freezing snowdrift on the front lawn.
Behind them, the roof of the old farmhouse collapsed inward with a thunderous crash, sending a massive plume of golden sparks and black smoke swirling into the blizzard sky.
Shawn pulled Brenda twenty yards away from the burning structure, collapsing into the snow, his lungs heaving as he drew in the freezing, clean winter air.
Through the roaring sound of the fire, the distant wail of multiple sirens echoed across the valley. Flashing red and blue lights appeared through the falling snow along Highway 8—not the single cruiser of the corrupt sheriff, but an entire convoy of Pennsylvania State Police cruisers and emergency vehicles, accompanied by two heavy-duty private black SUVs bearing the emblem of Apex Logistics.
