Chapter 8 - The Velvet Trap

The wind had shifted, blowing the acrid stench of burning diesel and gasoline across the snowfields. Shawn parked the truck out of sight at the edge of the woods and approached his childhood home on foot, moving through the tree line like a ghost.

The front yard was completely deserted. The massive, gaudy Christmas tree visible through the front bay window was fully lit, its multi-colored bulbs flashing cheerfully against the backdrop of destruction. From the rear of the house, black smoke billowed from the open basement hatch. Vance had poured accelerant into the cellar and lit it, intending to destroy the evidence of the bunker and let the fire consume the structure from beneath.

Shawn stepped onto the front porch, the wooden steps creaking beneath his boots. The front door was unlocked.

He pushed it open, stepping into the warm, carpeted foyer.

The living room was in complete disarray. Drawers were pulled out, papers were scattered across the polished hardwood, and luggage sat open on the sofa, stuffed with expensive clothes, jewelry, and stacks of banded hundred-dollar bills.

Brenda was kneeling on the floor beside the fireplace, frantically throwing ledgers and bank receipts into the roaring hearth. She was trembling violently, her hair disheveled, her mascara smeared down her pale cheeks.

"Burning the evidence won't save you, Brenda," Shawn said calmly, his voice slicing through the crackle of the flames.

Brenda gasped, dropping a handful of papers into the ash. She scrambled backward on her hands and knees until her back hit the base of the Christmas tree, sending glass ornaments crashing to the floor.

"Shawn!" she choked out, her voice cracked with hysterical terror. "You... you're supposed to be dead! Vance said his men took care of you at the barn!"

"Vance lied to you. Just like you lied to Mom and Dad," Shawn said, walking slowly into the center of the room, his hands held visible at his sides. "Why, Brenda? I sent you everything you ever asked for. When you said the farm needed a new roof, I sent ten thousand. When you said Dad needed surgery, I wired twenty thousand. All you had to do was ask me, and I would have given you whatever you needed. Why torture our own parents?"

Brenda’s face twisted into an ugly, bitter snarl, tears streaming down her face. "Because you left! You walked away to Columbus and became the golden boy! The big CEO! The generous son who sends checks from afar while I was stuck here in this dead-end town wiping their spills and listening to them talk about how proud they were of Shawn!"

"They loved you, Brenda," Shawn said, his heart aching with profound grief. "They would have given you this entire farm if you had just asked."

"I didn't want the damn farm, Shawn! I wanted out!" Brenda shrieked. "I wanted to live like the people in the magazines! But then the debts piled up... the casinos took everything... and Vance showed up. He promised he would handle the debts if I helped him get the land. But he's a monster, Shawn! He threatened to kill me if I backed out! He locked them down there, not me!"

"You held the key, Brenda," Shawn said softly. "You bought the lock."

Brenda broke down completely, burying her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably.

Suddenly, the cold metallic click of a revolver hammer cocking sounded from the shadows of the dining room archway.

"Touching family reunion," Vance Carter’s cold, mocking voice echoed through the room.

Vance stepped out from behind the velvet curtains, his face bruised and bleeding from the snowmobile crash, holding a nickel-plated .357 Magnum leveled directly at Shawn's chest.

"I have to admit, Miller, you're a lot tougher than you look," Vance sneered, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "Most city boys would have cried for their lawyers by now. But it doesn't matter. The fire downstairs has already reached the load-bearing beams. In ten minutes, this whole place collapses into a fiery crater."

"Let Brenda go, Vance," Shawn said, keeping his eyes locked on the barrel of the gun. "She gave you everything she had. Your quarrel is with me."

"Nobody leaves this room alive, Shawn," Vance smiled darkly, his teeth stained with blood. "A tragic murder-suicide on Christmas Eve. The prodigal son returns, loses his mind, kills his sister, and burns down the family estate. It's a clean story. And when the ashes cool, the county probate court will award the commercial option to my corporation."

Vance raised the revolver, centering the sight between Shawn's eyes.

"Say goodbye to your family, Miller."
