Chapter 6 - THE UNHOLY COMMUNION

The sanctuary devolved into an immediate, breathless uproar. Whispers rippled through the rows of dignitaries like wildfire through dry pine. Flashbulbs went off in blinding strobes as the press corps realized the uninvited guest was the woman reported to have "fallen" from the sixty-second floor.

Senator Malcolm Cross jumped to his feet, his face turning an apoplectic purple. "What is the meaning of this outrage? Security! Remove these trespassers from the church immediately!"

Two Secret Service agents assigned to the Senator stepped forward, but the lead FBI agent held up a federal badge and a sheaf of white paper bearing the golden seal of the Department of Justice.

"Step back, Senator," the Special Agent barked. "We are executing federal arrest warrants issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Interfere, and you will be arrested on the spot for obstruction of justice."

Vivian gripped Adrian’s hand with manic, claw-like strength, her eyes wild beneath her veil. "Adrian! Adrian, call your guards! It’s that insane woman—she’s stalking us! She tried to kill herself and now she’s trying to ruin our wedding! Tell them to throw her out!"

Adrian slowly, deliberately peeled Vivian’s white-gloved fingers off his sleeve. He took two steps back, descending the altar stairs, leaving her standing entirely alone on the raised marble platform.

"I didn't invite her to ruin the wedding, Vivian," Adrian said, his voice amplified by the lapel microphone he wore for the vows, broadcasting every syllable to the eight hundred guests and the live television feed. "I invited her to finish the audit."

Rosa halted at the foot of the altar, less than ten feet from the woman who had shoved her into the abyss. There was no fear in Rosa’s eyes. Only the cold, devastating precision of an auditor delivering the final balance.

"Vivian Cross," Rosa announced, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "On Thursday night, you took a blue folder from my hands and pushed me over the terrace railing of the Vale penthouse, attempting to murder me to prevent the exposure of your financial crimes."

"You're a liar! A deranged maid! Where is your proof?" Vivian shrieked, her composed socialite mask shattering into pieces. "My father will have your head for this!"

"The blue folder you stole was a decoy," Rosa said calmly, reaching into her blazer with her uninjured left hand and pulling out the small titanium drive. "The true digital ledgers were preserved. But more importantly... you forgot to look up when you were standing on that terrace."

Adrian signaled the back of the cathedral. Marcus, stationed in the audio-visual booth controlling the live wedding broadcast, tapped a console.

Instantly, the massive high-definition monitors mounted throughout the cathedral—installed to give guests in the back pews a clear view of the vows—flickered. The live camera feed vanished.

In its place appeared high-resolution, full-color exterior footage from the night of the gala.

The cathedral fell dead silent.

The footage had not come from the building’s compromised security system. It was recorded by the autonomous, high-definition panoramic exterior maintenance cameras mounted to the skyscraper across the street—a commercial tower owned entirely by Vale Capital.

On the sixty-foot monitors, with crystal-clear clarity, the entire high-society assembly watched Vivian Cross rip the folder from Rosa's hands, shove her backward over the safety rail, and lean over the edge with an expression of pure, predatory malice to whisper into the wind.

A collective, horrified gasp sucked all the air out of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Several society women covered their faces. Senator Cross sank back into his pew, the color leaving his skin as if he had been struck by lightning.

"The footage has already been transmitted to the Department of Justice," Rosa said, her voice cutting through the stunned horror of the room. "Along with the complete bank records detailing the embezzlement of eighty-four million dollars from Cross Global humanitarian accounts into your Swiss shell companies, authorized by your personal digital token fifteen minutes before the shove."

Vivian turned wildly to her father. "Daddy! Do something! Call the Governor! Call the Attorney General!"

Malcolm Cross stared straight ahead, his eyes hollow, his political career and dynasty dissolving before his eyes. He didn't move. He didn't say a word. He knew the golden rule of power: when the guillotine falls, you don't stick your neck under the blade to save someone else.

The lead FBI agent climbed the altar steps, his hand resting on a pair of chrome handcuffs. "Vivian Cross, you are under arrest for Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Wire Fraud, and Conspiracy to Defraud the United States. You have the right to remain silent..."

Vivian backed away, her heavy lace train tangling around her legs. "No! Don't touch me! Adrian, tell them! You put the ring back on! You chose me! You promised the wedding would proceed!"

Adrian walked to the edge of the altar, looking down at the hysterical woman in the ruined white dress.

"I promised the wedding would proceed, Vivian," Adrian said, his voice like cracking winter ice. "Because I wanted everyone you know—every politician you courted, every socialite you tried to impress, and every camera you craved—to see you for what you truly are. A thief. A liar. And an amateur."

As the steel cuffs clicked around Vivian’s delicate, diamond-adorned wrists, the massive diamond engagement ring slipped off her shaking hand, bouncing down the marble steps before coming to rest against the toe of Rosa Delgado’s shoe.
