Chapter 3 - THE WOLF AT THE DOOR

The corridor outside the intensive care wing transformed into a tactical standoff within ninety seconds. Senator Malcolm Cross strode past the nurse’s station as if he owned the hospital, flanking himself with two burly men in charcoal suits and an austere woman carrying an embossed leather briefcase.
"Adrian," Senator Cross said, extending an open hand with theatrical warmth. His silver hair was perfectly coiffed, his silver cufflinks gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights. "Thank God you're still here. Vivian has been completely beside herself with grief back at the penthouse. She can't sleep, she can't stop crying. The shock of watching a member of our household staff attempt self-harm has rattled her to her core."
Adrian did not take the offered hand. He stood squarely in front of Rosa’s closed door, Marcus and two Vale security operatives flanking him with stone-faced precision.
"Rosa didn't attempt self-harm, Malcolm," Adrian said, his tone deceptive in its conversational ease. "And she certainly isn't your household staff. She's mine."
"Semantics, son," the Senator dismissed with an easy wave of his manicured hand. "The girl clearly suffered a catastrophic psychotic break. The stress of the upcoming gala, the pressure of working in a high-profile residence—it happens. Dr. Aris here," he gestured toward the austere woman, "is the medical director at Silver Creek Sanatorium in the Adirondacks. We've secured a private suite, around-the-clock psychiatric evaluation, and comprehensive neurological rehab. In her state, with a traumatic brain injury, she cannot remain in a public hospital exposed to predatory journalists."
Dr. Aris produced a crisp, blue-stamped document from her briefcase. "I have an emergency order of protective custody signed by Judge Holloway. Given the suicide attempt from a high-rise structure, Miss Delgado is legally deemed an imminent danger to herself. We are authorized to transport her immediately."
"Judge Holloway," Adrian mused aloud, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "Isn't that the same judge whose re-election campaign received a three-hundred-thousand-dollar boost from the Cross Foundation’s civic action committee last spring?"
Senator Cross’s genial mask cracked, the political warmth instantly hardening into cold, patrician disdain. "Be very careful how you speak about federal officers of the court, Adrian. We are twelve days away from joining two of the greatest dynasties in New York. You are a brilliant venture capitalist, but you are a novice when it comes to the realities of power. My daughter loves you. I have blessed this union. Do not let an expendable servant create an irreparable fissure between our houses."
"I am protecting my assets, Malcolm," Adrian replied, stepping an inch closer, towering over the older man. "And right now, Rosa Delgado is an essential witness to an event that occurred inside my private property. Marcus, show the Senator the updated patient chart."
Marcus stepped forward, displaying an encrypted tablet. "At twelve-fifteen a.m., Miss Delgado legally signed over her medical power of attorney and legal conservatorship to Vale Enterprise Legal Trust. Her medical care is directed exclusively by Dr. Robert Chen, Chief of Trauma Surgery at Presbyterian, who happens to sit on my philanthropic medical board. Your civil order from Judge Holloway lacks jurisdictional standing over a private medical trust. Take one step into that room, Malcolm, and my legal team will file an immediate emergency injunction for witness tampering and attempted kidnapping against every single person wearing your badge."
The two private security guards behind the Senator shifted their weight, their hands straying toward their jackets. Marcus's men didn't flinch; the distinct, metallic click of a concealed retention holster echoed through the quiet hallway.
Senator Cross stared at Adrian for five long seconds. The air turned brittle, crackling with raw, institutional violence.
"Vivian was right about you," Malcolm said in a venomous whisper. "You have ice in your veins, Adrian. But remember this: you can hide her in this room, you can surround her with mercenaries, but the wedding is on Saturday. My daughter will walk down that aisle, and by noon, our family names will be legally indivisible. If you think you can embarrass the Cross family without burning your own empire to the ground, you are vastly underestimating what I am willing to sacrifice."
"I look forward to Saturday, Senator," Adrian said softly. "Give Vivian my love. Tell her I have already selected the perfect wedding gift."
Malcolm turned sharply on his heel, his coat billowing behind him as his entourage followed him toward the bank of elevators.
Adrian did not exhale until the elevator chime signaled their departure. He pushed the heavy oak door open and stepped back into Rosa's room. She was sitting upright, the blanket pulled to her chest, her knuckles pale white where she clutched the sheets.
"He tried to take me," she said, her voice shaking with adrenaline.
"He tried. He failed," Adrian said, tossing his phone onto the side table. "Marcus has already arranged an ambulance transfer under the cover of darkness. In three hours, you will be in the secure guest wing of my family's private compound in Westchester. It has a Class-Four biometric security perimeter, independent satellite communications, and twenty-four-hour surgical support. Malcolm Cross couldn't breach it with a tank."
Rosa let out a ragged breath. "And Vivian?"
"Vivian just texted me," Adrian said, glancing at the glowing screen. "She wants to know if I'll join her for the final floral tasting at the cathedral tomorrow afternoon. She asked if the 'poor maid' had regained her senses."

Rosa looked at Adrian, the sheer audacity of Vivian's cruelty reigniting the fury in her blood. "What did you tell her?"
"I told her I was completely focused on making our wedding unforgettable," Adrian replied. He pulled a black leather notebook from his pocket and laid it beside the titanium flash drive. "Now, Rosa. Walk me through the offshore routing numbers. Teach me how to break her."
