Chapter 10 - Downfall of the Patriarch

The boardroom descended into utter chaos.
Richard Vance sprang to his feet, knocking his leather chair backward. “This is outrageous! This is a baseless smear campaign designed to disrupt a multi-billion-dollar merger!”
“Is it, Richard?” Marshal Henderson stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. “Because your logistics director just signed a full federal confession in Atlanta detailing how you and Garrison Pike coordinated the abduction attempt in Savannah yesterday afternoon.”
Julianna let out a strangled shriek as two federal agents stepped behind her chair, placing their hands on her shoulders. “Get your hands off me! Do you know who my father is?”
“Richard Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy,” Marshal Henderson announced clearly, reading them their rights as the agents secured Richard and Julianna in handcuffs.
The board members stared in horror as the powerful Vance family was escorted out of the boardroom in shame, their careers and social standing obliterated in seconds.
Arthur sat frozen at the head of the table, his hands trembling against the polished wood. The arrogance that had defined him for decades had vanished, replaced by the hollow, vacant stare of a ruined man.
“Callahan…” Arthur croaked, his voice shaking with sudden frailty. “You’re destroying our family name. Everything I did… I did to preserve the Mercer legacy.”
I walked slowly down the length of the table, stopping right in front of him. I reached into my pocket and placed the battered, tarnished silver bracelet onto the mahogany wood between us. The moonstone caught the morning light.
“You didn't build a legacy, Father,” I said, looking him dead in the eye with zero remorse. “You built a prison made of greed and fear. You threatened a dying woman in hospice. You stole six years of my son’s life. You forced the woman I loved to sell flowers on a street corner just to survive.”
Arthur looked down at the bracelet, his lips quivering, unable to meet my gaze.
“The board is removing you as chairman effective immediately,” I continued, turning to the stunned board members. “All Valkyrie solid-state battery patents remain under my private control. The Vance merger is officially dead. Mercer Automotive will restructure under a public transparency trust, with ten percent of all annual corporate dividends dedicated permanently to affordable housing and maternal healthcare foundations in New England.”
The lead independent board director, a respected elder investor named Robert Thorne, stood up slowly. He looked at Arthur, then at me, and nodded firmly.
“The board accepts Callahan Mercer’s restructuring proposal,” Thorne declared. “Arthur Mercer, your tenure as chairman is terminated.”
Two federal agents stepped forward, gently assisting Arthur from his chair. As they led him toward the elevators to face federal questioning, Arthur stopped beside Rowena.

He looked at Leo, who stood bravely beside his mother, clutching her hand without a trace of fear.
“He has your eyes, Callahan,” Arthur whispered, a single tear slipping down his withered cheek before the elevator doors closed between us forever.
