Chapter 9 - THE HOSTAGE OF WORTH AVENUE

By midnight, our private jet had secured clearance to land at Teterboro Airport outside New York City. Accompanied by four armed federal marshals providing protective custody, Rowena, Leo, and I were escorted directly to a secure federal safe house in lower Manhattan.
While Rowena and Leo slept under round-the-clock federal protection, I spent the entire night in a conference room with Marshal Henderson, the Assistant United States Attorney, and my personal forensic accountants.
For six hours, we tore through the encrypted data extracted from Garrison Pike’s burner phone and the offshore transaction ledgers recovered from Vance Logistics.
The truth was far darker than I had ever imagined.
Arthur hadn't just framed Rowena six years ago; he had systematically embezzled over three hundred million dollars from the Mercer Automotive Pension Fund to cover catastrophic losses in speculative overseas real estate. When Richard Vance discovered Arthur’s fraud, he used the information to blackmail my father, forcing the arranged marriage between me and Julianna to merge the two conglomerates and absorb the stolen debt.
Rowena’s sudden reappearance in Palm Beach had threatened to blow their entire conspiracy wide open. If I abandoned the merger to be with Rowena and recognize Leo as my sole legitimate heir, the Vance family’s financial empire would collapse alongside Arthur’s.
At precisely nine o'clock the following morning, the grand boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Mercer Tower was packed to capacity.
Fifty board members, institutional investors, and legal representatives sat around the massive mahogany table. Arthur Mercer sat at the head of the table, looking frail but arrogant, while Richard Vance and Julianna sat beside him, flanked by a team of high-priced corporate defense attorneys.
Arthur cleared his throat, tapping his gavel against the table. “Ladies and gentlemen of the board, we are gathered here to officially ratify the merger between Mercer Automotive and Vance Logistics. In light of my son Callahan’s recent personal breakdown and refusal to fulfill his executive duties, the chair moves to permanently strip him of his voting shares and transfer all Valkyrie solid-state battery patents to the unified entity.”
“I second the motion,” Richard Vance declared with a smug grin.
“Before you take that vote,” a voice boomed from the back of the boardroom.
The heavy double doors swung open with a resounding crash.
I walked into the room, dressed in a sharp charcoal three-piece suit. Behind me walked Federal Marshal Henderson, two agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, and Rowena, who held Leo securely by the hand.
The entire boardroom erupted in stunned gasps. Several board members stood up in shock.
Julianna’s face turned an ashen shade of gray. “What is the meaning of this? Callahan, you are trespassing on corporate property!”
“Sit down, Julianna,” I said coldly, walking to the center of the room.
Arthur’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom as he stared at Rowena and Leo. “Callahan, you bring an illegitimate street vendor and her bastard into a Mercer board meeting? Have you lost your mind?”
“His name is Leo Callahan Mercer,” I declared, my voice echoing off the glass walls overlooking the Manhattan skyline. “He is my legitimate son, and he carries the certified DNA of the Mercer lineage.”

I tossed a thick stack of certified federal documents onto the center of the table, sliding them directly in front of the board members.
“And these documents,” I continued, “are the federal indictments for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit interstate kidnapping, and witness intimidation signed two hours ago by the United States District Court.”
