Chapter 4 - ASHES AND SECRETS

The stench of accelerating fumes flooded down the wooden stairwell, thick and suffocating.
Above them, the dry hay in the stable ignited with a terrifying roar. Orange light flickered through the cracks in the ceiling as plumes of black smoke began pouring down into the subterranean bunker.
Daniel didn't panic. The boardroom titan who had built an international logistics conglomerate from nothing took over. He stripped off his tailored wool jacket, soaked it in a bucket of stagnant water sitting near Clara’s cot, and wrapped it around his face.
“Hold your breath!” Daniel ordered Clara.
He scanned the underground bunker with frantic urgency. The room was lined with old industrial tools left behind by the estate’s original builders. In the far corner, half-hidden behind stacks of financial ledgers, Daniel spotted a five-foot heavy steel crowbar and an old pneumatic acetylene torch.
Daniel grabbed the crowbar, wedged the tip beneath the heavy concrete anchor holding Clara’s floor chain, and jumped onto the bar with all his weight.
CRACK.
The aged concrete shattered. Clara’s chain broke free from the floor.
“Can you walk?” Daniel yelled over the deafening roar of the inferno above.
“I can crawl!” Clara coughed, clutching his arm.
“We’re not going up through the barn door—the heat will kill us in seconds,” Daniel said, his eyes scanning the walls. He remembered the historical blueprints of the Carter Manor. The original 1920s estate had a drainage culvert connecting the stable sub-basement to the river gorge behind the property.
Daniel sprinted to the back wall, throwing aside stacks of cardboard boxes. Behind them stood a rusted iron grate covering a three-foot storm drain pipe.
Using the crowbar, Daniel hammered the corroded hinges until the metal gave way with a shriek. “In! Now!”
He helped Clara squeeze into the narrow, dark concrete pipe just as burning timber from the stable roof crashed through the ceiling above, sending a cascade of fire and glowing embers directly into the bunker. Daniel dived into the drain pipe behind her, the searing heat licking at the heels of his boots as the bunker was engulfed in a catastrophic fireball.
They crawled through pitch darkness, following the icy draft of fresh air, until the pipe opened into the rocky bank of the river behind the estate.
Daniel emerged into the daylight, coughing violently, his shirt covered in soot. In the distance, black smoke billowed hundreds of feet into the sky above the burning stables. The sirens of local fire engines wailed in the valley below.
Daniel ignored the smoke. His eyes were locked on the private helipad situated on the western ridge of his property.
A black executive helicopter’s rotors were already spinning up, beating the cold autumn air with a rhythmic whup-whup-whup.
Through the clearing, Daniel saw Victoria dragging Lily toward the open cabin door of the aircraft. Lily was fighting with every ounce of strength in her small body, kicking and screaming, trying to pull away.
Daniel turned to Clara. “Stay hidden by the river until the police arrive. I’m getting my daughter back.”
He didn't wait for an answer. Daniel sprinted up the steep, rocky embankment with reckless speed, his lungs burning, his muscles screaming under the strain.
Fifty yards away, Victoria shoved Lily into the helicopter and turned to climb aboard. But as she gripped the handle, she looked back across the lawn.
Her eyes widened in horror.
Emerging from the smoke, blackened by soot, bleeding from his hands, Daniel Carter was charging toward the aircraft like an unstoppable force of nature.
Victoria panicked. She screamed at the pilot, waving her arms furiously. “Take off! Take off right now! Kill him if you have to!”
The helicopter began to lift off the grass, rising three feet into the air.

Daniel launched himself forward with a desperate leap, his fingers locking onto the helicopter’s metal landing skid just as the aircraft surged upward into the open sky.
