Chapter 3 - ECHOES FROM THE DARK

The world seemed to fracture around Daniel Carter.

Eleanor, his first wife, his high school sweetheart, the mother of his child—the woman he had buried two years ago in a private mausoleum on the estate hill—was looking up at him from the center of the underground bunker.

Her hair was matted with gray dust, her cheeks sunken, her body frail beneath an oversized linen smock. But the piercing hazel eyes that met his belonged undeniably to the woman he had mourned every single night.

“Daniel...” the woman rasped, her voice dry as dead leaves.

“Eleanor? No... God, no... How is this possible?” Daniel stumbled down the first three steps, his mind rejecting the reality before him. He had signed the death certificate. He had wept over her sealed casket after the tragic car accident that claimed her life on a rainy stretch of Route 9.

“Daniel, don’t go down there!” Victoria screamed from the top of the stairs.

Daniel whirled around. Victoria was at the threshold, her face contorted with unbridled malice. In her trembling hands, she wasn't holding a phone or a purse. She was holding a heavy iron pry bar she had grabbed from the stable wall.

“You should have stayed on your business trip, Daniel!” she hissed, her voice trembling with hysteria. “You were supposed to be in London until Monday! Why couldn’t you just stay away?!”

Before Daniel could react, Victoria slammed the heavy oak door shut from the outside. The heavy iron drop-bar dropped into place with a resounding, definitive THUD.

“Daddy!” Lily’s muffled scream pierced through the wood.

“Lily! Run! Get to the security gate!” Daniel bellowed, throwing his weight against the solid timber. The door didn't budge an inch. The reinforced lock held firm.

Total darkness consumed the cellar, save for the single flickering bulb over the metal desk.

“She took Lily,” Daniel muttered in a panic, slamming his fists against the door until his knuckles split and bled. “Victoria! Open this damn door! If you lay a hand on my daughter, I will tear down everything you care about with my bare hands!”

“She won’t open it, Daniel,” a weak voice came from behind him.

Daniel turned around slowly in the dim, yellow glow. His breath came in ragged gasps as he descended the remaining stone stairs. The woman in the chair raised her head, lifting her thin, bruised wrists to reveal the heavy iron chain padlocked to the floor bolt.

“Who are you?” Daniel whispered, horror clutching his throat as he moved closer. Under the harsh light, he saw subtle differences—faint scars along the jawline, the slight angle of the nose. “You’re not Eleanor.”

“My name is Clara,” the woman wept quietly, tears carving clean lines through the grime on her face. “Clara Vance. I was Eleanor’s twin sister... the one she was separated from at birth. The one your wife found in an orphanage database three years ago.”

Daniel felt the ground vanish beneath his feet. “Why? Why would Victoria do this?”

Clara pulled at the chains, her chest heaving. “Because Eleanor never died in that car accident, Daniel. Victoria orchestrated everything. She drugged Eleanor, forged the DNA records using my blood, and swapped her into a private medical facility in upstate New York so she could step into your life, marry you, and gain control of the Carter Trust.”

“Where is Eleanor?!” Daniel yelled, his heart pounding against his ribs like a sledgehammer.

“She’s alive. At the St. Jude Sanitarium under a false name,” Clara sobbed. “Victoria kept me locked down here to force me to sign legal transfers and mimic Eleanor’s signatures on offshore accounts whenever corporate audits came up. And Lily... Lily figured it out when she found my old letters hidden under the floorboards.”

A sudden vibration shook the ceiling above them.

Daniel looked up. The smell of gasoline began to seep through the floorboards of the stable ceiling above. Victoria wasn't just locking them away. She was covering her tracks.

Daniel heard the distant crackle of sparks, followed by Victoria’s muffled voice speaking into her cell phone outside:

“Tell the pilot to prepare the jet. The estate is burning, and I have the heiress.”
