Chapter 9 - WRATH OF THE SYNDICATE

"MIA!"
Willow didn't think. She didn't calculate angles, heights, or probabilities. As Mia fell from the catwalk, she tumbled toward a secondary safety net suspended twenty feet above the ground—a heavy steel mesh meant to catch falling industrial debris, but rotting with age.
Mia hit the rusted netting with a sickening thud. The aged steel groaned, three retaining bolts snapping under the sudden impact, leaving the net tilted at a perilous forty-five-degree angle, sagging precariously over the crushing teeth of the metal shredder below.
Mia shrieked, clutching the wire mesh with bleeding fingers, sliding inches toward the abyss.
Willow sprinted across the concrete, leaped onto an industrial forklift, and scrambled up the steel scaffolding like a wild animal. Her hands tore against rusted metal, her muscles screaming with agony, but she felt none of it. Her entire universe had narrowed down to the little girl slipping toward death.
Below, the warehouse erupted into pure, unfiltered hell.
Josiah saw his daughter suspended between life and death, and whatever remnants of his humanity vanished. He discarded his empty rifle, drew twin pistols, and charged the central staircase leading to the catwalks.
Salvatore Moretti emptied an entire magazine at him.
A bullet caught Josiah in the left shoulder, spinning him around, blood soaking through his tactical vest. Another round grazed his cheek. Josiah didn't even flinch. He didn't slow down. He climbed the metal stairs like a demon rising from the underworld, his face bathed in blood and unadulterated fury.
He reached the upper platform just as Dante, dragging his shattered leg, tried to raise his gun.
Josiah didn't waste a bullet. He caught Dante by the throat, lifted the two-hundred-pound man off his feet with a roar of pure rage, and slammed him against the steel railing.
"You touched my daughter," Josiah snarled, his voice a low, vibrating vibration of death.
"Josiah... wait..." Dante choked, his eyes bulging in terror.
Josiah threw him over the railing without a second thought. Dante's body tumbled into the darkness, swallowed by the crushing teeth of the machinery below.
Salvatore Moretti backed away, scrambling toward an emergency exit ladder, but Josiah was already upon him. Josiah tackled the older mob boss to the grating, disarming him with a brutal kick that shattered Moretti’s wrist.
Josiah stood over the man who had ordered the murder of his wife and the kidnapping of his child. He pressed the cold muzzle of his pistol directly between Moretti’s eyes.
"This is for Maria," Josiah whispered.
Bang.
The shot echoed through the cavernous foundry, signaling the absolute end of the Moretti bloodline.
Twenty feet below, Willow had reached the edge of the sagging safety net. The remaining bolts were shrieking, metal tearing away from the concrete wall.
"Mia! Give me your hand!" Willow yelled, hanging over the edge of the steel beam, her arm stretched out to its absolute limit.
"I can't! I'm slipping!" Mia cried, tears blinding her as she dangled above the grinding gears.
"Look at me, Mia!" Willow screamed, her voice cutting through the mechanical roar. "Look at my eyes! You are not going to fall! Remember what your mother did? She saved you so you could live! Now reach for me! Plant your feet and reach!"
Mia looked up. Through the tears, she saw the woman who had knelt with her in the glass, the woman who had bled for her, the woman who had loved her without conditions.
With a desperate, terrified scream, Mia let go of the wire mesh and lunged upward.
Willow caught her wrist.
The sudden weight nearly pulled Willow off the beam. The rusted bolts holding the net completely gave way, crashing into the shredder below in a shower of sparks. Willow hung by one arm from the steel beam, her other arm holding Mia over the empty air.
Her injured forearm tore open, blood soaking through the gauze, agony shooting through her shoulder. Her grip was slipping.
"Willow!" Mia sobbed.
"I’ve got you," Willow gasped through gritted teeth, her face purple with exertion. "I won't... let... go..."
Suddenly, a massive, blood-stained hand clamped around Willow’s wrist, pulling with the strength of ten men.
Josiah was there.
Bleeding from his shoulder, his face streaked with soot and blood, he reached down with both arms and hoisted both Willow and Mia over the edge of the beam, tumbling all three of them onto the solid concrete floor of the upper platform.
Mia threw her arms around both of them, burying her face into Willow’s neck, weeping hysterically. "Daddy! Willow! You came! You came!"
Josiah wrapped his massive arms around his daughter and Willow, burying his face into Willow’s hair, his body trembling violently. "I've got you. You're safe. My brave, beautiful girls. You're safe."
Willow clutched them both, her vision blurring, the exhaustion and blood loss finally catching up to her.
As the sirens of Josiah’s private medical convoy wailed in the distance, Josiah leaned down, pressing his forehead against Willow’s, his dark eyes filled with tears.

"Stay with me, Willow," he pleaded, his voice breaking. "Please. Don't close your eyes."
"I'm not... going anywhere..." Willow whispered, before the world gently faded to black.
