Chapter 8 - Into the Lion’s Den

Josiah looked at Willow, the torrential rain washing over both of them. For a brief second, the invincible mafia kingpin had looked broken, destroyed by the sight of his child in the clutches of his worst enemy. But looking into Willow’s fierce, unwavering gaze, the fire in his soul roared back to life with catastrophic intensity.
He grabbed her hands, pulling himself to his feet. "Dante took her by river. There’s only one place Salvatore would take her—the old ironworks foundry on the North Docks. It’s Moretti’s primary stronghold. It’s fortified like a fortress."
"Then we tear it down," Willow said without blinking.
Josiah stared at her. "You are not coming, Willow. This is a slaughter. You stay here with the reinforcements."
"I am not leaving her!" Willow shouted over the roar of the thunder. "She woke up from her nightmare tonight because of me. If she wakes up in that warehouse and sees only monsters, she will break! I am coming with you, Josiah, and if you try to lock me in this house, I swear to God I'll steal a car and follow you myself!"
Josiah grabbed the back of her neck, pulling her face roughly to his, and kissed her—hard, desperate, and breathless, tasting of rain, blood, and fierce devotion. It was a vow sealed in the middle of a storm.
"If you die tonight, Willow Hayes," Josiah whispered against her lips, his breath hot and ragged, "I will burn this entire city to the ground to find you."
Twenty minutes later, a convoy of four armored black SUVs tore through the industrial wasteland bordering the northern docks. Josiah sat in the lead vehicle, clad in heavy tactical armor, checking the magazines of three different automatic weapons. Next to him, Willow wore a Kevlar vest beneath an oversized jacket, a compact 9mm pistol holstered at her hip.
The old ironworks foundry loomed against the gray pre-dawn sky—a decaying titan of rusted corrugated steel, towering smokestacks, and broken cranes jutting out into the black water of the river.
Josiah’s radio crackled. "Boss, sniper team is in position on the north gantry. We count fifteen hostiles on the ground floor, three on the catwalks. Dante and Moretti are on the central crane platform with Mia."
Josiah clicked his mic. "No survivors. Breaching in three... two... one."
A deafening explosion blew the ironworks’ massive reinforced rolling doors off their tracks.
The black SUVs surged through the smoke, tires screeching across the oil-slick concrete. Heavy machine-gun fire erupted instantly, lighting up the cavernous interior of the foundry with strobing muzzle flashes.
Josiah was an absolute force of nature. He leaped from the SUV while it was still moving, his rifle spitting fire with surgical precision. Two Moretti guards dropped before they could raise their weapons. Josiah moved through the crossfire like a phantom of death, every shot deliberate, every movement calculated to eliminate any threat between him and his child.
"Willow! Stay behind the engine block!" Josiah roared as bullets sparked off the hood of the truck.
Willow crouched low, her heart pounding in her ears. High above them, suspended sixty feet in the air on an industrial loading gantry, stood Salvatore Moretti.
Salvatore was an older man, gaunt and cruel, dressed in a long leather trench coat. Beside him stood Dante, holding Mia, who had regained consciousness and was kicking and screaming with all her might.
"Josiah!" Salvatore’s voice boomed through the factory's PA system, accompanied by mocking laughter. "Look up, my friend! Look at your legacy!"
Josiah stopped in the middle of the warehouse floor, stepping over three dead mercenaries, his rifle trained upward. "Let her go, Salvatore! You want my head? Come down and take it yourself!"
"Oh, I'll take your head, Josiah," Salvatore sneered, leaning over the catwalk railing. "Right after you watch your precious bloodline fall sixty feet into the scrap shredder below!"
Dante hauled Mia over the edge of the railing, holding her by the collar of her pajamas over the gaping, churning steel maw of an industrial metal compactor.
"Daddy! Willow!" Mia shrieked, her tiny legs dangling in the empty air.
"Dante, please!" Willow screamed, stepping out from behind the cover of the vehicle, tears streaming down her face. "She's an innocent child! Take me! You wanted leverage? Take me!"
Dante laughed coldly. "You're just a waitress, sweetheart. You're nothing."
"She’s not nothing," a whisper echoed from the shadows behind Dante.
On the upper catwalk, Josiah’s chief sniper, who had scaled the crane exterior unnoticed during the firefight, fired a single, silenced shot through the back of Dante’s right knee.

Dante shrieked in agony, his leg buckling beneath him. His grip on Mia’s collar slipped.
Mia plummeted into the open air.
