Chapter 4 - The Price of Blood

The hissing sound of the canister was immediately followed by the sharp crack of shattering glass at the far end of the hallway.

"Tear gas!" someone screamed from the waiting room. Panic erupted as patients and nurses scrambled for the exits.

Matthew reacted with instant, lethal instinct. He ripped off his tailored suit jacket, wrapped Sarah inside it completely, and pulled her behind the heavy steel reinforced reception desk.

"Close your eyes, hold your breath, and stay down," Matthew whispered into Sarah’s ear.

Through the rising wall of white smoke, two figures emerged. They wore tactical balaclavas, black assault vests, and carried suppressed submachine guns. They were not common thugs; their movements were deliberate, military-grade, and focused entirely on the room where Anne lay fighting for her life.

"Target alpha is in room 4B. Secure the girl. Terminate the mother before resuscitation completes," a raspy voice ordered through a tactical throat mic.

Matthew’s blood boiled with primal rage. Six years of stolen time, six years of lies, and now these monsters were trying to slaughter his family in cold blood.

Matthew stayed low. As the first operative stepped past the reception desk, sweeping his weapon toward the trauma bay, Matthew lunged.

Moving with explosive speed honed through years of Krav Maga and elite combat training, Matthew grabbed the barrel of the operative’s rifle, forcing it downward. With his other fist, Matthew drove an open-palm strike directly into the operative’s throat. The man gagged as his trachea compressed. Matthew seized the operative’s head, slamming it violently into the marble edge of the reception desk. The man went limp, crashing to the floor.

Matthew snatched the fallen tactical sidearm—a customized SIG Sauer 9mm—and racked the slide in a single, fluid motion.

The second gunman spun around, raising his weapon, but Matthew was already firing.

Thwip! Thwip!

Two suppressed rounds punched through the gunman’s shoulder and knee. The man collapsed, screaming in agony, dropping his weapon as crimson splattered across the white walls.

Matthew stepped over the fallen mercenary, pressing the hot barrel of the pistol directly against the man’s forehead.

"Who sent you?" Matthew demanded, his voice chillingly calm.

The wounded operative spat blood onto the floor, glaring through his mask. "Julian Vance... sends his regards, Sullivan. You’re too late. The boy’s room is already filling with water. If you don't transfer the bearer bonds and the Sullivan Global encryption keys to the offshore node by midnight... you’ll bury your son at sea."

Matthew did not waste another breath. He struck the man across the temple with the butt of the weapon, knocking him unconscious.

At that moment, the heavy fire doors at the front of the corridor were kicked off their hinges with a thunderous crash.

"Clear! Move, move, move!"

A six-man tactical team clad in dark gray armor poured into the corridor, weapons raised. At the front was Marcus Vance, his assault rifle sweeping the smoky hallway before locking onto Matthew.

"Hold fire! It’s Mr. Sullivan!" Marcus barked. "Perimeter secure! Clear the exits!"

Marcus sprinted to Matthew’s side, taking in the scene: the two neutralized mercenaries, the smoke, and little Sarah clinging to Matthew’s leg.

"Sir! Are you injured?" Marcus asked, breathing heavily.

"I’m fine. Sarah is unharmed," Matthew said, pulling the child into his arms. "Marcus, your cousin Julian is behind this. He has my son trapped at the abandoned North Point Waterworks. We have less than three hours before they flood the chamber."

Marcus’s face hardened into stone. "I cut ties with Julian ten years ago when he dishonored our family. Give the word, sir, and I will lead the assault team myself."

"No," Matthew said, his eyes burning with cold resolve. "We do this together. But first, Anne."

Matthew stepped back into Trauma Bay 4. Dr. Kline was leaning against the wall, chest heaving, sweat dripping from his chin.

The cardiac monitor was no longer flatlining. A steady, rhythmic beep resonated through the room.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

"We got her back," Dr. Kline breathed, looking at Matthew with utter exhaustion and awe. "Her pulse is stabilized, but she’s in a deep medical coma. We need to move her to an advanced ICU immediately."

"She’s not staying here," Matthew said. "Marcus, call the private medevac chopper to the roof. Transport Anne to the Sullivan Medical Annex under full armed guard. Deploy Alpha Team to secure Sarah at the penthouse."

"No!" Sarah suddenly cried out, her small hands grabbing Matthew’s shirt tightly. "Daddy, don't leave me! Please don't leave me!"

Matthew’s heart shattered. He looked down at the five-year-old girl who had spent her entire life hiding in shadows and holding onto broken toys.

He knelt down, pressing his forehead against hers. "Sarah, you are the bravest girl in the world. You saved your mother's life today. Now I have to go save your brother. I promise you on my life, when the sun rises, we will all be together."

Sarah looked into his eyes, searching for truth, and finally gave a small, brave nod. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the tiny, faded beaded bracelet.

"Take this," Sarah whispered, slipping the bracelet onto Matthew’s wrist. "It kept me safe. It will protect you and Leo."

Matthew stared at the bracelet, his heart filling with unstoppable resolve.

"Get ready, Marcus," Matthew said, rising to his full height as his gaze turned toward the stormy night outside. "We’re going to war."
