Chapter 9 - THE SILENT RECKONING

The swinging halogen light cast wild, erratic shadows across the damp concrete floor.
"Let the boy go, Matteo," Adrian said, walking forward with measured, unhurried steps, stopping ten paces away. His hands were out at his sides, coat open, visibly showing no firearm in his waist holster. "You have the girl. You have the codes on the terminal in her hands. Let Gabriel walk out to the car."
Matteo chuckled, a sickening, manic sound that echoed up into the empty heights of the grain silos. "You think I'm an amateur, Moretti? The boy stays until the funds hit my accounts in Panama. Step back, Adrian. Hands on your head. Kneel on the concrete."
Adrian’s jaw clenched, but he slowly raised his hands and sank to one knee in the dirt and gravel. Seeing the undisputed king of Chicago brought to his knees was a visual Matteo clearly relished; the Camorra heir puffed out his chest, arrogance flooding back into his posture.
"Now, Graziella," Matteo sneered, gesturing with the barrel of his revolver toward a rusted metal desk where a ruggedized laptop sat humming. "Come unlock my inheritance. Or I put a hole in your new boyfriend's kneecap right now."
Grace didn't hesitate. She stepped forward, her heels clicking steadily against the concrete. She didn't look at Matteo’s mercenaries; she looked directly at Gabriel.
The boy was terrified, his eyes wide with unshed tears.
As Grace walked past him toward the desk, she didn't speak. Instead, behind the fold of her coat where Matteo couldn't see, her fingers moved in precise, rhythmic sign language aimed at the boy's peripheral vision: Close your eyes. Count to three. Drop to the floor.
Gabriel had grown up with Isabella. He knew the signs. A subtle flicker of understanding crossed the boy’s terrified face.
Grace reached the desk and placed her hands on the keyboard.
"Type it," Matteo barked, stepping up beside her, the stench of cheap cologne and sweat radiating off him. He pressed the cold muzzle of the revolver directly against the soft skin behind her right ear. "Every single key. If I see a transfer failure screen, I pull this trigger."
"The secondary string requires a dual-phase bypass," Grace said smoothly, her voice utterly devoid of emotion. Her fingers began typing an intricate string of code.
On the screen, a progress bar began to fill. 20%... 40%... 60%...
"Hurry up," Matteo hissed, his finger tightening on the trigger.
"Almost there, Matteo," she murmured.
With her left hand, Grace covertly slipped the ceramic knife from her boot cuff, concealing it against the underside of her sleeve.
80%... 95%... 100%.
The screen flashed bright red: SYSTEM PURGE INITIATED. ALL OFFSHORE ASSETS PERMANENTLY LIQUIDATED TO CHARITY.
Matteo’s eyes widened in horror. "What did you do?!"
Now! Grace screamed in her mind.
She didn't run. She pivoted on her heel, driving the ceramic blade straight into the meat of Matteo’s gun arm with all the force in her body.
Matteo shrieked in agony, his revolver discharging harmlessly into the ceiling as his grip failed.
Simultaneously, Gabriel squeezed his eyes shut and threw his entire body sideways, toppling his chair to the concrete floor out of the line of fire.
"Adrian!" Grace screamed.
Adrian was already moving. From the kneeling position, he sprang forward like an uncoiled steel spring. He didn't draw a gun—he drew two concealed ceramic blades from the forearms of his coat. In a blur of lethal motion, he closed the distance to the two nearest mercenaries, slashing their throats in two fluid, horrifying strokes before they could even level their rifles.
The remaining four gunners opened fire, but Adrian dragged Matteo’s screaming body up as a human shield.
Bullets ripped into Matteo’s torso, the Camorra boss howling as his own men’s rounds perforated his chest and abdomen.
High above in the rafters of the grain silo, the muffled crack-crack-crack of suppressed sniper rifles echoed. Leo’s extraction team had infiltrated through the grain chutes. The remaining four mercenaries dropped instantly, clean headshots pitching them lifeless onto the dirt.
Silence slammed back into the warehouse.
Adrian threw Matteo’s riddled, bleeding body onto the concrete. The Camorra heir lay gasping, pink foam bubbling at his lips, his life bleeding out into the dirt.
Adrian didn't look down at him. He sprinted straight to Grace, seizing her by the arms, pulling her into his chest with violent relief. "You're whole. You're alive," he rasped, his voice breaking with raw emotion.
Grace buried her face into his shirt, shaking, but then pulled back. "Gabriel! Untie Gabriel!"
Adrian rushed to his nephew, slicing the zip-ties with a single stroke. The teenager threw his arms around his uncle, sobbing. Adrian held the boy tightly, kissing the top of his head. "I've got you, Gabe. You're safe. It's over."
From the floor, a wet, ragged cough drew their attention.
Matteo was staring up at them with dimming, venomous eyes. He looked at Grace, his trembling, bloody hand reaching into his pocket.

"If... if I burn..." Matteo wheezed, his bloody teeth bared in a dying grin, "...we all burn."
In his hand was a military detonator. The red LED was blinking furiously.
