Chapter 7 - THE ENCRYPTED KEY

The kiss burned through the chill in Grace’s veins like liquid gold, intoxicating and fierce. For a fleeting moment, the violence of Chicago and Naples ceased to exist. There was only the heat of Adrian’s mouth, the scratch of his evening stubble against her jaw, and the steady, thunderous beat of his heart beneath her palms.

When he finally pulled back, his breath was ragged, his dark eyes dilated with raw desire. He rested his forehead against hers, his fingers still tangled in her soft hair.

"Sleep," he whispered against her lips. "I have guards outside the door. Nothing breaches this room."

Before she could answer, he rose, turning on his heel with disciplined control, and vanished through the mahogany doors to coordinate the hunt for Matteo.

Grace didn't sleep.

She spent the remaining pre-dawn hours pacing the expansive bedroom, the weight of the situation crushing her lungs. Matteo was in the city. Adrian’s family had suffered casualties. The only reason Matteo was tearing Chicago apart wasn't romantic obsession—it was money and survival.

The two encrypted thumb drives she had taken from her father’s safe didn't just contain bank account numbers. They contained the Master Ledger: the complete geopolitical bribe registry of the Italian banking syndicate, including the offshore holding accounts holding over four hundred million dollars of Camorra wealth.

Matteo couldn't survive without those funds. Without them, the other Italian families would tear him apart for insolvency.

At 7:00 AM, a soft knock sounded at the adjoining terrace door.

Grace turned, expecting a guard. Instead, Isabella Moretti entered, carrying a silver tray with hot espresso and freshly baked brioche. The older woman wore a simple cashmere wrap, her demeanor serene despite the armed perimeter outside.

Eat, Isabella signed, setting the tray on the glass coffee table. Worry does not fill an empty stomach.

Grace walked over, sinking onto the sofa. Thank you, signora.

Isabella studied Grace with sharp, intelligent hazel eyes. You love him. Already.

Grace’s hands hesitated, mid-air. He is a dangerous man. I come from a world of dangerous men. It never ends well.

My husband was a monster to the world, Isabella signed, her expression softening with profound memory. He killed with a word. But with me, he was gentle. He built a fortress around me because the world treats the deaf as broken toys. Adrian is his father's son. He will burn Chicago to ashes to keep you safe. But you must give him the tools to fight.

Grace bowed her head. The ledger. I have the key.

Then use it, Isabella urged, leaning forward, taking Grace's hands. Do not hide behind him like a helpless child. You are Marco Viterbi's daughter. Fight beside him.

A sudden fire ignited inside Grace’s chest. She had spent eighteen months running, cowering in dark alleys, wiping tables for minimum wage, terrified of every shadow. She was sick of running.

She set down her coffee cup, rose to her feet, and walked down the grand corridor toward Adrian’s war room.

Two guards stepped in front of the double oak doors, but Grace didn't blink. "Step aside," she said, her voice carrying a cold authority she hadn't used since Naples.

The guards exchanged a startled glance, then lowered their weapons and opened the doors.

Inside, the room was thick with cigar smoke and tension. Adrian stood at the head of a tactical map table surrounded by six lieutenants, including his younger brother Leo, whose arm was wrapped in heavy bandages from the docks.

"...we locate his private jet at Gary Airport and we breach the hangar," Leo was saying, slamming a fist onto the map.

"No," Grace’s clear voice cut through the testosterone-fueled haze.

Every head snapped toward her. Adrian’s eyes flared with annoyance, then darkened with intrigue as she walked purposefully toward the table.

"Graziella, this isn't the place for you," Adrian said, stepping forward to intercept her. "Go back to bed."

"Shut up and give me a laptop with an isolated satellite connection," Grace commanded, meeting his gaze with unyielding steel.

A stunned silence fell over the mafia lieutenants. Leo choked on his water, looking at Adrian as if expecting his brother to execute the woman on the spot.

Instead, Adrian’s lips slowly twitched into a lethal, proud smile. "Get her a machine. Now."

Within two minutes, a military-grade laptop was open before her. Grace’s fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with blazing speed. She didn't look at the screen; she looked at the memories etched into her brain—the alphanumeric sequence her father had made her memorize before his car erupted into flames.

Enter.

A high-pitched chime sounded. A series of green financial dashboards cascaded across the high-definition displays on the war room wall.

"What is that?" Leo breathed, staring at the screen.

"That," Grace said, turning to Adrian with eyes blazing, "is every single euro Matteo Rossi owns. Four hundred and twelve million dollars distributed across twenty-four dummy corporations in Zurich and the Cayman Islands. And with this keystroke..."

She hovered her finger over the enter button.

"...I just transferred every single cent into an escrow trust controlled exclusively by the Moretti family foundation. Matteo Rossi is penniless. His mercenaries won't fight for a man who can't pay their bar tabs."

Adrian stared at the glowing screens, then slowly turned his gaze back to Grace. In his eyes was sheer, unadulterated awe.

Before anyone could speak, the satellite phone on the table trilled with an incoming video call.

Adrian tapped the speaker.

A split screen appeared on the central monitor. Matteo Rossi was pacing a filthy, derelict warehouse, his face bruised, his expensive coat gone. His phone was buzzing violently in his hand—alerts from his Swiss bankers notifying him of total financial ruin.

"You bitch!" Matteo screamed into the camera, his eyes wild with madness. "You think you've won? Look at my screen, Adrian! Look at what I have!"

The camera shifted. Tied to a wooden chair in the damp shadows of the warehouse, a bloody gag in his mouth, was Adrian's sixteen-year-old nephew, Gabriel.
