Chapter 8 - THE SMOKING GUN

“Man in the water! Coast Guard deploy!” an FBI team lead shouted into his radio.
Searchlights immediately swept the churning dark waves beneath Pier 48. Sirens echoed across the harbor as two tactical response boats sped toward the pier, cutting through the chop with high-powered halogen beams.
I rushed to the wooden crates and scooped Emily into my arms, pulling her against my chest until I could feel her rapid heartbeat matching mine.
“You’re safe, baby. You’re safe. I’ve got you,” I sobbed into her hair, the tears I had held back for two days finally pouring down my face.
Marcus knelt beside us, gently placing his dry overcoat around my shivering shoulders. “Ethan won’t survive that current in freezing temperatures, Clara. But even if he washes ashore alive, he has nowhere left to run. Every port, airport, and train station on the West Coast is locked down.”
“What about Margaret?” I asked, my voice hardening. “She’s the architect of all of this.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened with righteous anger. “Margaret is currently at her estate in Mercer Island, hosting a ‘crisis press conference’ where she’s playing the heartbroken mother whose daughter-in-law had a mental breakdown. She thinks she’s untouchable.”
He stood up, pulling a signed document from his inside pocket.
“This is a federal arrest warrant for conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, attempted kidnapping, and corporate espionage. The Department of Justice authorized full tactical execution. Would you like to come watch the fall of the Vance empire, Clara?”
I wiped the tears from my eyes, looked down at Emily, who was clutching David’s old wedding band in her tiny hand, and nodded.
“I wouldn't miss it for the world.”
Thirty minutes later, a convoy of six black federal vehicles with flashing blue lights crossed the floating bridge toward Mercer Island. The storm had finally cleared, leaving the night sky filled with sharp, cold stars.
Inside the lead SUV, Marcus plugged David’s flash drive into his laptop, decrypting the remaining hidden partition.
“Look at this,” Marcus said, turning the screen toward me.
It was a live ledger of offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands and Zurich. For the past three years, Margaret had been siphoning millions from Ethan’s failing real estate ventures while secretly laundering money through a fake charitable trust established in Emily’s name.
Margaret wasn't just planning to send Emily to Switzerland to hide her. She had taken out an eight-million-dollar life insurance policy on my daughter, naming the Swiss institution’s trust as the sole beneficiary in the event of an “unfortunate childhood medical accident.”
The monstrosity of it took my breath away.
Margaret hadn't just intended to rob Emily.
She had planned to eliminate her once the patent rights were secured.
My knuckles turned white as I stared out the window at the approaching wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate.

Tonight, Margaret Vance was going to pay for every single tear Emily and David had ever shed.
