Chapter 10 - THE COURTROOM SHOWDOWN

Six months later.

The United States District Court in Seattle was packed to maximum capacity.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored navy suit, holding David’s wedding ring on a gold chain around my neck. Beside me sat Marcus, who had led the federal prosecution team through what the media had dubbed "The Biotech Betrayal Trial."

At the defense table sat Ethan and Margaret Vance.

Gone were the tailored tuxedos, diamond earrings, and expensive silk suits. Both wore bright orange prison jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles shackled to the floor. The six months in solitary confinement awaiting trial had aged Margaret twenty years; her gray hair hung unwashed, and her face was gaunt. Ethan looked entirely broken, refusing to look in his mother’s direction after they had spent the entire trial testifying against each other to avoid the death penalty.

Judge Sarah Lin slammed her gavel down, bringing the courtroom to absolute silence.

“In the matter of the United States versus Ethan Vance and Margaret Vance,” Judge Lin began, her voice echoing with stern authority. “The jury has found both defendants guilty on all counts: Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Wire Fraud, Aggravated Kidnapping of a Minor, and Corporate Espionage.”

Judge Lin turned her piercing gaze toward Ethan.

“Ethan Vance, your greed and cowardice led to the murder of a brilliant scientist and the systematic psychological abuse of an innocent child. For your crimes, I sentence you to two consecutive terms of Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at ADX Florence Federal Supermax.”

Ethan slumped forward, burying his face in his shackled hands, sobbing uncontrollably as the federal marshals pulled him to his feet.

Judge Lin then turned her attention to Margaret.

“Margaret Vance, you orchestrated the murder of David Hayes and plotted the indefinite imprisonment and exploitation of a seven-year-old girl with cold, sociopathic calculation. You have shown zero remorse throughout these proceedings. I sentence you to Life Imprisonment without parole at the Federal Medical Center Carswell, with all personal and family assets forfeited to the United States Marshals Service for full restitution to the Hayes estate.”

Gavel slam.

“Court is adjourned.”

Margaret didn't cry. She stared straight ahead as the marshals unlocked her chair and dragged her toward the holding cells, her reign of terror officially and permanently terminated.

As the courtroom cleared, Marcus turned to me with a warm, genuine smile.

“It’s over, Clara. Everything David built is officially returned to you and Emily. The patent has been assigned to Hayes Bio-Tech, and the court has placed the foundation in an irrevocable trust under your sole name.”

I took a deep, full breath—the first real breath I had taken in three years.

“Thank you, Marcus. For everything.”

“David was a great man,” Marcus replied softly. “He would be proud of how fiercely you fought for your daughter.”
