Chapter 11 - A PROMISE WRITTEN IN MARBLE

Six months later.

The summer sun flooded the grand hall of the Long Island estate, turning the polished white marble into a sea of liquid gold. The dark mahogany furniture had been rearranged to make room for a custom-built, miniature wooden tea table right beside the grand fireplace.

Serena walked through the hall, wearing an elegant cream-colored sundress that flowed around her knees. There were no trays in her hands, no stains on her sleeves. Around her neck was a delicate platinum chain carrying a star-shaped diamond pendant—a custom piece designed to mirror the scar on her wrist.

Sitting at the tea table in a tailored charcoal three-piece suit—minus the vest—was Damiano Conti.

The Don of the Eastern Seaboard was currently balancing a tiny, hand-painted porcelain teacup between his massive, scarred fingers, sipping imaginary chamomile tea with absolute solemnity.

Across from him sat Lucia, wearing a bright yellow dress with matching shoes that lit up with every kick of her heels. Sitting between them on a velvet chair was Barnaby, who now sported a meticulously sewn new velvet ear, stitched by Damiano’s personal Italian tailor.

"More sugar, Mr. Shiny Shoes?" Lucia asked, lifting the empty plastic teapot with supreme elegance.

"Two lumps, Miss Lucia," Damiano replied without breaking character. "Business was heavy today. I need the energy."

"Mommy says too much sugar gives you zoomies," Lucia warned, pretending to pour into his cup. "And mob bosses shouldn't have zoomies in the hallway."

Serena leaned against the archway, her heart swelling with a warmth she had once thought impossible in this lifetime. The shadow of the Valentis had been dismantled; the traitors had been purged; the name Moretti was no longer a curse, but a respected legacy etched into the Conti family registry.

Damiano caught Serena’s eye across the hall. The ruthless, cold expression that had once terrified a city melted away completely, replaced by a soft, genuine smile that belonged solely to her and the little girl between them.

He stood up, walking across the hall to meet Serena. He wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her gently against his side.

"Did the contractors finish the playground in the west garden?" Elena asked, resting her head on his shoulder.

"They did," Damiano said softly, kissing the crown of her head. "Complete with a miniature castle and a slide that goes into the pool. Exactly as the boss ordered."

"Which boss?" Elena teased, looking up into his grey eyes.

Damiano glanced back at the tea table, where Lucia was currently attempting to feed an imaginary biscuit to her one-eared rabbit.

"The one in the glowing red shoes," Damiano smiled. "I learned my lesson. In this house, we don't argue with her."

Lucia looked over her shoulder, her hands on her hips, her pigtails perfectly even this time. "I heard that! Now come back, the tea is getting cold!"

Damiano laughed—a rich, deep, joyful sound that echoed through the grand halls, washing away every ghost of the past, sealing a promise written not in blood, but in love.
