Chapter 10 - Sins of the Fathers, Fire in the Rain

Within ninety seconds, the warehouse was quiet again, save for the crackle of burning electrical wiring and the steady drumming of rain pouring through the shattered skylight. Seven mercenaries lay motionless across the floor.

Marco, bleeding from a shoulder wound, backed away toward the rear industrial furnace, dragging his submachine gun uselessly behind him.

Damiano walked forward through the drifting smoke, his long coat soaked in rain, his eyes glowing with an icy, lethal certainty. He tossed his empty magazines to the concrete with a hollow clatter and reloaded fresh rounds without breaking his stride.

"Damiano... wait!" Marco choked out, hitting the rusted brick wall of the furnace, his hands trembling as he raised his silver revolver. "We were brothers! We grew up on the same stoop! Leo was going to ruin us!"

"Leo was family," Damiano said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet whisper. "Elena was family. You traded them for percentages."

"You think you're better than me?" Marco screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You're a killer! You'll always be a monster!"

A gunshot echoed through the bay.

Marco gasped, looking down at his chest where a single red blossom bloomed through his tactical vest. The revolver slipped from his fingers, clattering against the steel grate. He sank to his knees, his eyes wide with shock as he looked up at Damiano.

"You're right," Damiano whispered, standing over him as the light faded from Marco’s eyes. "I am a monster. But I am their monster."

Marco collapsed forward onto the wet concrete, motionless.

Damiano turned around immediately. He holstered his weapon and ripped off his soaked, heavy wool coat, tossing it aside.

He ran to the steel pillar, pulling a combat knife from his boot to slice through the heavy nylon ropes binding Elena. She slumped forward into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably as he caught her against his chest.

"I have you," Damiano murmured, burying his face in her hair, his arms locking around her with a fierce, protective power. "Elena, I have you. It’s over."

From the crate beside them, a tiny hand reached out, tugging at the lapel of Damiano’s vest.

Damiano pulled back, kneeling down in front of Lucia. The little girl had tears tracking through the dust on her cheeks, but she looked straight into his eyes.

Damiano reached into his inner pocket. He pulled out the one-eared stuffed rabbit, completely dry, brushed clean, and tucked safely under his arm.

He handed it to her.

Lucia grabbed Barnaby, squeezing him against her chest with all her might. Then, she looked up at Damiano, her lower lip trembling slightly. "Did you fix the two wrong things?"

Damiano looked at Elena, whose eyes were filled with tears of relief and wonder. Then he looked back at the little girl who had shattered his cold, lonely empire and rebuilt it with a single demand.

For the first time in twenty years, the most feared man in New York got down on both knees on the filthy concrete floor, bowed his head, and spoke with absolute sincerity.

"Serena... Elena," Damiano said softly, taking her trembling hand in his. "I am deeply, truly sorry for being blind. I am sorry for every tear you shed because of my house. And I swear to you, on my life, you will never have to run again."

Lucia nodded solemnly, patting Damiano’s head with Barnaby’s single ear.

May you like

"Okay," Lucia decreed. "You can come to breakfast now."
