Chapter 5 - THE ENEMY HIDING INSIDE THE EMPIRE

Nobody moved.

Not even Carter.

The man who had spent his entire life believing he was the future of Hayes Holdings was now staring at the person responsible for creating the nightmare his family had hidden for decades.

Robert Hayes.

The missing heir.

The ghost from the past.

The man everyone believed had disappeared.

But there he was.

Standing above us.

Alive.

Smiling.

And completely unafraid.

"Grandfather..."

Carter whispered.

The word carried more fear than surprise.

Robert looked down at him.

"Disappointed?"

Carter didn't answer.

Because for the first time in his life, he was seeing the person who had shaped his family's legacy.

And realizing that legacy was built on something rotten.

Robert slowly walked down the stairs.

Security immediately raised their weapons.

Julian lifted one hand.

"Nobody moves."

His eyes never left Robert.

"You shouldn't be here."

Robert smiled.

"Neither should she."

His eyes moved toward me.

"Maya Lin."

Hearing my full name from him felt wrong.

Like he had stolen something from me.

"You look exactly like your mother."

My body froze.

"You knew my mother?"

Robert smiled.

"I knew everyone in this family."

I stepped forward.

"You destroyed my family."

The room went silent.

Robert looked amused.

"Strong."

He nodded.

"Eleanor would have liked that."

"Don't say her name."

My voice shook.

"You don't get to say her name."

For the first time, Robert's smile disappeared.

"You think Eleanor was a hero?"

Nobody spoke.

"She lied to you."

I stared at him.

"No."

Robert laughed softly.

"That's what she wanted you to believe."

Julian immediately interrupted.

"Don't listen to him."

Robert looked at Julian.

"Still protecting her?"

A strange tension filled the room.

I noticed it.

The way Julian reacted.

The way Robert spoke.

Like there was a history between them.

"You knew my grandmother."

Julian looked at me.

"I did."

"How?"

Silence.

Then he answered.

"Because Eleanor Hayes was the woman who saved my life."

The confession shocked me.

Julian Vance.

The billionaire who seemed untouchable.

Had a connection to my grandmother.

Robert smiled.

"Tell her."

Julian's face hardened.

"Enough."

"No."

Robert looked at me.

"She deserves to know everything."

He pointed at Julian.

"Your protector wasn't just Eleanor's ally."

A pause.

"He was her chosen successor."

I looked at Julian.

"What?"

Robert continued.

"Before Eleanor disappeared, she transferred control of the company to Julian."

My heart dropped.

"But the documents..."

Julian stepped forward.

"Maya—"

"You knew?"

My voice broke.

"You knew about me before tonight?"

Julian didn't deny it.

And that hurt more than anything.

"How long?"

A long silence.

"Six months."

I stepped back.

Six months.

The same amount of time I had been waiting.

The same amount of time I had been collecting evidence.

The same amount of time Julian had known who I really was.

"You let me stay at Hayes Holdings."

"Maya..."

"You watched Carter treat me like that."

His expression changed.

"I was protecting you."

"By lying to me?"

Nobody spoke.

Because they knew.

This was not about business anymore.

This was about trust.

Robert watched with satisfaction.

Because this was exactly what he wanted.

He wanted me to doubt Julian.

He wanted me alone.

And suddenly I understood.

The most dangerous enemy wasn't the person holding the knife.

It was the person convincing you nobody else could be trusted.

Julian moved closer.

"I didn't tell you because Eleanor made me promise."

"Why?"

"Because she knew if the Hayes family discovered who you were too early, they would come after you."

I looked at him.

"And now?"

His voice became quiet.

"Now they already have."

Before I could respond, Robert's phone rang.

He answered.

Then smiled.

"What?"

Carter looked nervous.

Robert ended the call.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Your father's location has been found."

Everything stopped.

My breathing stopped.

My heart stopped.

"My father?"

Robert smiled.

"Yes."

A pause.

"And he wants to meet you."

The room went silent.

But then Robert added:

"Unfortunately..."

He looked at Julian.

"He doesn't know the truth."

A chill went through me.

"What truth?"

Robert smiled.

"The truth that the man you call your father..."

May you like

"...was the one who betrayed Eleanor Hayes."
