Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO WAS ERASED FROM HISTORY

The ballroom had never been quieter.
Not when Carter Hayes had cut my hair.
Not when Julian Vance had walked through the doors with armed security.
Not even when the entire Hayes empire changed ownership in front of two hundred powerful people.
Nothing compared to the silence that followed those two words.
"Your father."
I stared at Julian.
For a moment, I honestly thought I had misunderstood him.
Because my father had been dead.
At least, that was what I had been told my entire life.
My mother had raised me alone.
She had worked two jobs.
She had skipped meals so I could eat.
She had held me through every nightmare.
And whenever I asked about my father, she always gave the same answer.
"Some people leave because they are weak, Maya."
I was six years old when I first understood that meant he wasn't coming back.
By the time I was old enough to ask more questions, my mother refused to answer them.
Then she became sick.
And eventually, she took every secret with her.
But now Julian Vance was standing in front of me, telling me the biggest lie of my life had been built around a man I thought was gone forever.
"You're saying my father is alive?"
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
Julian didn't answer immediately.
That scared me.
Because Julian Vance was not a man who hesitated.
He negotiated billion-dollar deals without blinking.
He walked into hostile boardrooms and made executives twice his age nervous.
But now...
Now he looked like a man remembering something painful.
"Maya."
He lowered his voice.
"Your father's name was Alexander Lin."
The name felt unfamiliar.
But somehow...
Not completely.
Like a song I had heard once as a child and forgotten.
"Why have I never heard that name?"
Julian looked toward the crowd.
Then back at me.
"Because the Hayes family erased him."
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
Carter's face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
"You knew?"
I turned toward him.
Carter looked uncomfortable.
Like someone had accidentally exposed a secret he had spent years hiding.
"You knew about my father?"
He looked away.
That answer was enough.
My chest tightened.
"Carter."
My voice became colder.
"Look at me."
Slowly, he did.
"What did your family do to him?"
Carter didn't respond.
But Victoria did.
She stepped backward.
"Carter..."
Her voice was almost a whisper.
"You never told me about this."
For the first time, Carter looked like someone who had lost control of the situation.
Because this was bigger than business.
Bigger than money.
This was family.
Julian turned toward everyone.
"The Hayes family fortune was not built only through investments and acquisitions."
He paused.
"It was built through secrets."
Nobody moved.
"Alexander Lin was Eleanor Hayes' most trusted financial strategist."
I listened carefully.
"My father?"
Julian nodded.
"Your father was the person who actually saved Hayes Holdings during its first major crisis."
The room became still.
"He created the expansion model that turned Hayes Holdings from a regional company into a national empire."
My hands tightened.
"Then why did nobody know?"
Julian's expression darkened.
"Because your father discovered something."
"What?"
"That members of the Hayes family were stealing from the company."
The words hit harder than I expected.
"Carter's grandfather?"
Julian nodded.
"And others."
A billionaire dynasty built on betrayal.
A family name everyone respected.
A company everyone admired.
All hiding corruption underneath.
"My father tried to expose them."
I whispered.
"Yes."
Julian looked at me.
"And that is why he disappeared."
The room seemed to tilt.
"No."
I shook my head.
"My mother told me he abandoned us."
Julian's expression softened.
"Your mother believed that for years."
"Believed?"
He nodded.
"Because she was lied to."
I looked at him.
"What happened?"
Julian took a slow breath.
"Your father wasn't killed."
A pause.
"He was forced to disappear."
The crowd reacted.
Some people gasped.
Others whispered.
But I barely heard them.
My entire life was changing in front of me.
"My mother knew?"
"Eventually."
Julian said.
"After Alexander sent her evidence proving the Hayes family betrayal."
My heart stopped.
"Evidence?"
Julian nodded.
"The same evidence your grandmother hid."
I looked down at the ring.
The ring suddenly felt heavier.
"Why did my grandmother wait until now?"
Julian looked at the ring.
"Because she knew someone would eventually come after you."
A chill moved through me.
"And she was right."
Before I could ask what he meant, every security guard in the ballroom suddenly moved.
Julian's expression changed instantly.
Not fear.
Preparation.
"What happened?"
One of his guards approached.
"Mr. Vance."
He whispered something into Julian's ear.
Julian's jaw tightened.
Then he looked at me.
"Maya."
Something about his tone made my stomach drop.
"What?"
"We need to leave."
"Why?"
He looked toward the massive glass windows overlooking Chicago.
"Because someone just tried to access Eleanor Hayes' private archive."
My blood went cold.
"What does that mean?"
Julian stepped closer.
"It means someone knows you found the truth."
The lights suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the entire ballroom went dark.
People screamed.
Glass shattered somewhere in the distance.
Security immediately surrounded me.
And through the darkness, a voice echoed from the balcony.
A voice I had never heard before.
But one that made Julian freeze.
"Hello, Maya."
The lights returned.
Slowly.
Standing above us was an older man in a black suit.
Silver hair.
Cold eyes.
And a face that looked strangely familiar.
Everyone recognized him.
Because his picture was on the walls of Hayes Holdings.
The founder's son.
The man believed to be dead.
Robert Hayes.
Carter's grandfather.
And the man my grandmother had spent decades trying to expose.
He smiled.
"After all these years..."
His eyes locked onto me.
"...my brother's granddaughter finally comes home."
Julian stepped in front of me.
But Robert only laughed.
Because he knew something we didn't.
Something hidden inside Eleanor's final message.
May you like
Something that could destroy not only the Hayes family...
But me.
