Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM INVASION

Derek let out a high-pitched whimper of agony as he knelt on the floor, his face pressed against the cold wood, pinned effortlessly by the massive security operative.
"Let go of him!" Evelyn screamed, clutching her pearls, her voice shrill and trembling. "Do you know who we are? Julian! Call the police! We're being attacked by thugs!"
Julian, Derek's arrogant cousin who had laughed loudest during the foot-washing demand, stood frozen in the hallway archway. His hands were shaking so violently that his iPhone slipped from his fingers, clattering uselessly against the baseboard. Behind the two operatives in the doorway stood Marcus, wearing a bespoke charcoal wool overcoat and carrying a slim carbon-fiber briefcase.
Marcus walked past Derek as if he were an discarded piece of trash, stepping directly up to Chloe. He stopped two paces away, lowered his head with complete, unfeigned respect, and opened the briefcase.
"Extraction and asset acquisition teams are in position, Director Vane," Marcus announced crisply. "The foreclosure notices have been registered with the county clerk. Apex Capital now legally owns the physical deed to 442 Oak Ridge Way, as well as the commercial leases for Sterling Crest Brokerage. Eviction notices are signed."
The room fell so dead silent that the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like cannon fire.
"Director... Vane?" Evelyn croaked, her aristocratic composure completely evaporating. "What did he call you? Your name is Chloe Vance! You're an interior decorator from Delaware! You don't have any family!"
"Vane is my real name, Evelyn," Chloe said, turning to look at her mother-in-law with an icy, tranquil gaze. "My father was Arthur Vane. When he died, he left me eighty percent of Vane Global Logistics, Apex Capital, and thirty-four corporate entities that lease the very office space Derek’s company occupies in downtown Manhattan."
Derek looked up from the floor, his face pale as chalk, his eyes bloodshot with horror. "Arthur Vane? The... the defense contractor and venture fund billionaire? That's impossible. You drove a Honda! You clipped coupons for groceries!"
"Because I wanted a normal life, Derek," Chloe said, stepping closer to him, her shadow falling completely over his trembling frame. "I spent twenty-five years in boardrooms, war rooms, and arbitration chambers. I watched greedy, vicious men claw each other to pieces over power. I thought you were different. I thought you were kind, humble, and hardworking. I was willing to share everything I had with you. I was going to pay off your company's hidden debts on our honeymoon as a wedding gift."
Derek felt the floor dropping out from beneath his stomach. A wave of nausea hit him so violently he thought he would vomit on the floorboards. "You... you were going to pay my debts?"
"Three million is pocket change to my family's trust, Derek. It’s what we spend on legal retainers in a quarter," Chloe continued, her voice devoid of pity. "Instead, within twelve hours of putting a ring on my finger, you showed me who you really are. A petty, cruel, weak little man who needs to force women to their knees to feel like a master."
"Chloe, please—baby, listen to me!" Derek cried out, trying to scramble up, but the operative’s boot remained firmly planted on the back of his calves. "It was a tradition! It was just a stupid family joke! My mother pushed me into it! She’s traditional, you know how old women are! I love you! I swear to God, I was just stressed about the business!"
"Don't you dare blame me, you coward!" Evelyn screeched, turning on her son like a cornered viper. "You were the one who said she needed to be put in her place before she realized how much money you owed! You planned this!"
"Quiet," Chloe said.
She didn't raise her voice, but the absolute command in her tone made both Evelyn and Derek snap their mouths shut instantly.
"Marcus," Chloe instructed without looking away from Derek. "Bring in the forensic audit team. I want every ledger in Derek’s safe opened, every hard drive cloned, and every account tied to the Sterling name audited. Let's see what else my husband forgot to mention during our engagement."
"Already done, ma'am," Marcus replied, pulling a thick blue folder from the briefcase. "The forensic team has been reviewing their server backups for the last forty minutes. And it appears Derek's problems go much deeper than a defaulted commercial loan."
Marcus opened the folder, revealing a series of stamped transaction receipts with bright red IRS warning flags attached to them.

"What is that?" Derek whispered, his voice cracking into absolute panic.
Marcus looked down at him with cold disdain. "It appears Mr. Sterling has been running an offshore skimming scheme through three shell corporations registered in Belize, siphoning funds from his clients' trust accounts to maintain the appearance of personal wealth. Total misappropriated capital: twelve point four million dollars."
