Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT MY SISTER TRIED TO SELL MY EMPIRE

Ryan wanted to go immediately.
Claire refused.
"That is exactly what Derek expects."
"He has Emma's documents."
"And he's inviting the owner of a billion-dollar company into an unknown location alone."
Emma stood beside the study window.
"Ryan, you're not going."
He looked at her.
"He stole your identity."
"Then stop treating me like I'm something you have to rescue without asking."
The words landed hard.
Ryan nodded.
"You're right."
Emma turned.
"I spent years having people make decisions for me because they claimed they were protecting me. I won't do that again."
Ryan crossed the room.
"Then we go together."
Claire sighed.
"You are both giving me gray hair."
Ryan almost smiled.
Claire didn't.
"I'm serious."
She pointed toward the phone.
"We don't walk into Derek's meeting. We control it."
By evening, Claire had contacted Redwood Bank's fraud division, outside counsel for Bennett Hospitality, and a federal investigator who had previously worked with Ryan's company on an embezzlement case.
They did not yet have enough to predict criminal charges.
They had more than enough to start documenting fraud.
The bank office in Derek's photograph belonged to Monarch Private Capital, a small investment firm in downtown Dallas.
Claire arranged a simple strategy.
Ryan would allow the scheduled meeting to continue.
But Monarch would know he was coming.
Derek would not.
At 8:55 the next morning, Ryan and Emma stepped from an elevator on the thirty-first floor of a glass tower overlooking the city.
A bank attorney met them quietly and escorted them into an observation room.
Through one-way glass, Ryan could see the conference room next door.
Derek sat at the table.
Jennifer sat beside him.
Ryan's jaw tightened.
Emma whispered, "She knew."
Ryan nodded.
His sister had spent the previous night crying in Ryan's home, claiming her husband had betrayed everyone.
Now she was sitting beside him.
A folder rested in front of them.
Victor Sloan entered five minutes later.
He looked nothing like a trapped criminal.
Perfect suit.
Silver tie.
Calm expression.
He shook Derek's hand.
Then Jennifer's.
Ryan watched the man he had trusted for eight years open a briefcase.
Inside was the corporate seal.
The same seal from the security footage.
A Monarch executive entered.
Victor began talking.
"Mr. Bennett remains overseas and has authorized us to complete this transaction under delegated authority."
The executive nodded.
"Do you have the original authorization?"
Victor handed him several pages.
Claire, standing beside Ryan, whispered, "There's the power of attorney."
Emma looked at Ryan.
"Did you sign it?"
Ryan studied the signature through the glass.
"I might have."
That was the worst part.
He had signed hundreds of documents during the Barcelona acquisition.
Victor knew precisely when Ryan was tired, distracted, and under pressure.
He knew which pages Ryan would trust him to explain.
The Monarch executive continued.
"And Mrs. Bennett's consent?"
Jennifer slid Emma's passport onto the table.
"Everything is notarized."
Emma's fingers curled.
Ryan placed his hand over hers.
The executive examined the papers.
"Very well."
Victor leaned back.
"Once the equity pledge is recorded, we can release the initial thirty-six million."
Ryan felt a wave of disbelief.
Thirty-six million dollars.
Derek smiled.
Jennifer actually looked excited.
The executive asked, "Where will funds be distributed?"
Victor slid over another document.
"According to the schedule."
Ryan looked at Claire.
"Now?"
She nodded.
Ryan opened the door.
The sound of it made everyone at the table turn.
Jennifer's face lost all color.
Derek stood so quickly his chair rolled backward.
Victor did not move.
Ryan entered with Emma beside him.
"Good morning."
Jennifer whispered, "Ryan."
He looked at the documents.
"Please don't stop on my account."
The Monarch executive leaned back, allowing the performance to unfold.
Derek looked toward the exit.
Two investigators stood there.
His shoulders dropped.
Jennifer turned on him instantly.
"You said he wouldn't know!"
Derek stared at her.
"Shut up."
"No, you said Victor had everything covered!"
Victor finally smiled.
"Both of you need to stop talking."
Ryan looked at him.
"Still giving orders."
Victor folded his hands.
"Someone has to."
Ryan sat across from him.
"You forged my property transfer."
"No."
"You're on video."
"I advised your family on asset restructuring."
"You watched Jennifer trace my signature."
"Did I?"
Ryan's eyes narrowed.
Victor nodded toward Claire.
"Videos can be interpreted many ways."
Emma placed her hands on the table.
"What about accounts opened in my name?"
Victor looked at her.
For the first time, his calm expression sharpened.
"You may want to be careful about that accusation."
"Why?"
"Because those accounts don't help you."
Ryan leaned forward.
"Explain."
Victor opened another folder.
Bank statements.
Wire authorizations.
Tax forms.
All in Emma's name.
Jennifer stared at them.
Even she appeared surprised.
Victor slid one toward Ryan.
"Over four years, approximately six-point-three million dollars passed through accounts registered to your wife."
Emma shook her head.
"I never controlled those accounts."
"Prove it."
"We will."
Victor smiled.
"And while you try, regulators will ask why your spouse received payments from vendors doing business with Bennett Hospitality."
Ryan's voice became hard.
"You created those vendors."
"Again, prove it."
Derek suddenly laughed nervously.
"Victor, this wasn't the agreement."
Victor didn't look at him.
Ryan noticed.
Derek was afraid of Victor.
Very afraid.
Claire placed a document on the table.
"The transaction is canceled. Monarch has frozen the application."
Victor nodded.
"I assumed so."
Jennifer stared at him.
"You assumed?"
Victor began packing his briefcase.
"What did you think would happen? Ryan came home. Your husband panicked. Michael kept recordings. This operation was compromised the moment the security footage surfaced."
Derek stepped forward.
"You said you could fix it."
"I can."
Victor looked at Ryan.
"If Ryan is reasonable."
Ryan didn't move.
Victor closed his briefcase.
"Walk away from the property dispute."
Ryan almost laughed.
"You stole my house and now you're offering me permission to walk away?"
"The mansion is irrelevant."
Victor's gaze shifted to Emma.
"The real issue is what happens if federal investigators receive the accounting files I've prepared."
Ryan's expression changed.
"What files?"
"A complete record showing systematic misuse of company funds."
"By you."
Victor smiled.
"On paper? By Emma."
Emma stared at him.
Victor continued.
"Vendor approvals bearing her electronic signature. Transfers to her accounts. Copies of her identification attached to corporate disbursements."
Ryan rose.
"You framed my wife."
Victor remained seated.
"I protected myself."
"From what?"
"From men like you who build empires and assume everyone beneath them will remain grateful."
Ryan leaned across the table.
"You were paid twelve million dollars last year."
"And you made hundreds of millions."
"So this is jealousy?"
Victor laughed.
"No. This is leverage."
He reached into his briefcase and placed one final document on the table.
It was an old limited power of attorney.
Ryan recognized his signature.
This one was real.
Victor tapped a paragraph.
"I suggest your attorney read Section Nine."
Claire pulled the paper toward her.
She read silently.
Then again.
Ryan watched her face.
"What?"
Claire looked up.
"It's broad."
"How broad?"
"Victor had authority to execute certain financing instruments connected to corporate expansion."
Ryan stared at Victor.
Victor stood.
"Tomorrow morning, a package goes to regulators unless you sign over your interest in the Dallas property dispute, release me from all civil claims, and authorize a negotiated separation from Bennett Hospitality."
Emma looked at him.
"And if Ryan refuses?"
Victor met her eyes.
"Then investigators discover that millions of stolen dollars traveled through accounts belonging to you."
Ryan stepped between them.
Victor smiled.
"Love makes wealthy men very predictable."
He picked up his briefcase.
"By the time Ryan proves you were framed, your name will be everywhere."
He headed toward the door, then paused.
"Oh, Ryan."
Ryan said nothing.
Victor looked back.
"You might ask Emma why one of those accounts was accessed from this mansion three years ago."
Emma froze.
Ryan slowly turned toward her.
May you like
Victor's smile widened.
"Because unlike the others, that login came from her personal computer."
