Chapter 6 - The Last Mission

The first window shattered before Mercer finished speaking.

Daniel threw himself over Lily.

Owen killed the lights.

Koda barked once, sharp and controlled.

No one screamed.

Training took over.

Daniel moved Lily toward the basement door while Owen covered the front of the house.

Maya grabbed a medical bag.

Voss stood frozen.

“Move!” Daniel shouted.

That woke him.

They descended into the basement.

Owen followed.

“I’ve got six men outside. Maybe eight.”

“Mercer?”

“Staying behind the vehicles.”

Daniel looked at Voss.

“You said he wanted Maya dead.”

“He did.”

“Why come personally?”

Maya answered.

“The card.”

Daniel looked at her.

“He thinks it’s the only evidence.”

Owen smiled grimly.

“It isn’t anymore.”

Before leaving the office, Owen had encrypted copies uploaded to three dead-man servers.

One went to federal investigators.

One to a national investigative journalist.

One to an attorney whose instructions were simple: release everything if Owen missed two scheduled check-ins.

Mercer didn’t know that.

They needed to keep it that way.

Owen opened a concealed steel door.

“Tunnel leads to an equipment barn two hundred yards east.”

Daniel looked impressed.

“You built an escape tunnel?”

“I sell security to paranoid rich people. Research is deductible.”

Even Maya laughed once.

They moved.

Koda stayed at Maya’s side.

Lily remained silent in Daniel’s arms.

Halfway through the tunnel, she whispered, “Daddy?”

“Yes.”

“Is this a mission?”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“No, baby.”

Koda looked at Lily.

Daniel corrected himself.

“Actually, yes.”

Lily nodded seriously.

“What do I do?”

“You hold your rabbit and stay with me.”

“I can do that.”

“I know.”

They reached the barn.

Owen had another vehicle stored inside.

As Daniel strapped Lily into the back seat, gunfire sounded near the house.

Mercer’s men had entered.

Owen started the engine.

“Federal team is twenty minutes out.”

“We don’t have twenty.”

“Nope.”

They escaped through a rear service road.

For five minutes, nobody followed.

Then headlights appeared.

Owen glanced in the mirror.

“Company.”

Daniel looked behind them.

Two SUVs.

“Mercer?”

“Probably.”

The road twisted through farmland.

Owen accelerated.

Maya held Lily.

Koda braced between the seats.

Voss looked terrified.

Daniel almost laughed at him.

“You survived war surgery and four years of Mercer, but Owen’s driving scares you?”

“This man is insane.”

Owen shouted, “Thank you.”

The first SUV gained ground.

Daniel opened his window.

Maya grabbed his arm.

“No.”

“I’m not shooting unless I have to.”

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

For half a second, they were husband and wife again.

Not Claire and a grieving widower.

Not two strangers connected by scars.

Maya looked at him exactly the way she had before his deployments.

Come back.

Daniel covered her hand with his.

“I will.”

The pursuing SUV moved closer.

Then flashing lights appeared at the intersection ahead.

Federal vehicles.

Owen grinned.

“About time.”

The first pursuing SUV immediately turned away.

The second stopped.

Agents surrounded it.

But Mercer wasn’t inside.

Daniel knew before anyone said it.

Mercer would never put himself in the first wave.

Three hours later, federal agents secured the property and transported them to a protected facility.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Accounts.

Videos.

Shipment numbers.

Names.

Maya’s false death records.

Voss’s testimony.

The empty grave.

But Mercer had disappeared.

And by morning, national news organizations were reporting that retired Commander Grant Mercer was wanted for questioning concerning military procurement fraud, conspiracy, falsification of records, and attempted murder.

Daniel watched the coverage from a safe apartment.

Maya entered.

“They’re going to tell everyone about me.”

“Eventually.”

“I don’t know if I’m ready.”

“You don’t owe anyone a performance.”

She smiled weakly.

“You got more patient.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I became a father.”

“That’ll do it.”

Silence settled.

Maya sat beside him.

“I remember our wedding.”

Daniel looked at her.

“All of it?”

“Your tie was crooked.”

“It was intentionally relaxed.”

“It was crooked.”

Daniel smiled.

“You were late.”

“Seven minutes.”

“Eleven.”

“You counted?”

“I was marrying a SEAL. I assumed punctuality.”

He laughed.

Maya began crying.

Daniel stopped.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“It’s good.”

She looked at him.

“I remember loving you.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“But?”

“I don’t know how much of her is me yet.”

He nodded.

“You don’t have to.”

“You waited four years.”

“I survived four years.”

“That’s different.”

He reached for her hand.

“I’m not waiting for the woman who left. I’m getting to know the woman who came back.”

Maya squeezed his fingers.

That was enough.

For now.

Lily appeared from the bedroom.

“Mommy?”

Maya froze.

Lily held up her rabbit.

“He needs surgery.”

Maya wiped her face.

“What happened?”

“Ear emergency.”

Maya stood.

“I specialize in ear emergencies.”

Daniel watched them disappear into the bedroom.

For the first time in years, home felt possible.

Then his secure phone rang.

Owen.

Daniel answered.

“Owen?”

“Where’s Lily?”

Daniel stood.

“In the bedroom with Maya.”

“Check.”

Something in Owen’s voice made Daniel run.

The bedroom was empty.

Window open.

Rabbit on the floor.

No Lily.

No Maya.

Daniel’s world stopped.

Then Koda began barking from the hallway.

Not frightened.

Tracking.

Daniel followed.

Koda led him to the rear stairwell.

A smear of blood marked the railing.

Not much.

Maya’s.

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A photograph arrived.

Lily sat inside a vehicle, frightened but unharmed.

Maya beside her.

Mercer sat opposite them.

Under the image was one sentence.

ONE LAST TRADE.

Daniel called Owen.

“Find them.”

“Already working.”

Koda sniffed the railing.

Then suddenly ran toward the parking garage.

They reached the lowest level.

A gray sedan was missing.

Security footage showed Mercer wearing a maintenance uniform.

Maya had fought him.

He had displayed something beneath his jacket.

Then he had taken Lily.

Maya went willingly to protect her.

Owen arrived.

“Vehicle abandoned twelve minutes away.”

“Then what?”

“Helicopter.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Destination?”

“Flight plan says Norfolk.”

“Lie.”

“Obviously.”

Daniel grabbed his gear.

Owen looked at him.

“You retired.”

“So did Koda.”

The dog barked.

Owen smiled.

“Apparently nobody got the memo.”

They tracked the helicopter using a short burst from Maya’s stolen hospital badge.

The signal appeared near an abandoned naval logistics field outside Chesapeake.

Daniel knew the place.

Mercer had trained there twenty years earlier.

Night fell as Daniel, Owen, Koda, and a federal tactical team approached.

The helicopter sat on an old runway.

A second aircraft was warming up.

Daniel saw Maya.

Mercer dragged her toward it.

Lily was already inside.

Daniel moved.

An agent grabbed him.

“Cross.”

“My daughter.”

“We have protocol.”

“My daughter doesn’t.”

Daniel broke toward the runway.

“Koda!”

The German Shepherd ran with him.

Mercer saw them.

He fired into the air.

“Stop!”

Daniel stopped.

Mercer held Maya against him.

“Card!”

“You’re too late,” Daniel shouted. “It’s everywhere.”

Mercer’s face changed.

“You’re lying.”

“Check the news.”

For the first time, Mercer looked uncertain.

That was enough.

Maya drove her elbow backward.

Mercer stumbled.

Koda charged.

Daniel sprinted toward Lily.

But Mercer recovered.

He grabbed Lily from the aircraft doorway and pulled her against his chest.

Daniel froze.

“Daddy!”

Mercer backed toward the helicopter.

“Not another step.”

Rotor blades spun faster.

Federal agents couldn’t fire with Lily blocking the shot.

Maya screamed her daughter’s name.

Mercer climbed aboard.

The helicopter began lifting.

Daniel ran.

He caught the landing skid.

“Daniel!” Maya screamed.

The aircraft rose.

Ten feet.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Daniel hung beneath it with both hands.

Inside, Lily cried for him.

Mercer leaned out.

May you like

Looked down.

And raised his boot over Daniel’s fingers.
